College arms: "Sable an open book proper edged or bound gules the dexter page charged with the Greek letter alpha the sinister page charged with the Greek letter omega both sable the whole between three escallops argent"

LINACRE COLLEGE was established by the University in 1962 as a Society for men and women graduates reading for advanced degrees and diplomas of the University in all subjects. For the first two years of its existence, the College was governed by a Delegacy appointed by the University, but since 1964 the Governing Body has been the Principal and Fellows. The title of the Society was changed from Linacre House to Linacre College in 1965; the College was granted its Charter and full autonomy in 1986.

In addition to Official Fellows, the College elects to Honorary, Emeritus, Supernumerary, Adjunct and Industrial Fellowships as well as to Senior Research Fellowships and Junior Research Fellowships, of which six are usually awarded annually. Annual elections are also made to four Domus Studentships and two Thomas Linacre Studentships. The College has funds supporting graduate scholarships in specific areas and providing financial assistance to members of the College for fieldwork, attendance at conferences and other academic purposes.

The College moved from its original building on St Aldate's to its present site on Cherwell Edge in 1977. The Governing Body currently consists of Official and Senior Research Fellows and four representatives of the Common Room, including one Junior Research Fellow. There are at present 280 graduate student members of the College in residence, divided almost equally between scientists and students of the social sciences and humanities. Nearly half the student body is from overseas, representing over forty countries.
