MANSFIELD COLLEGE received a Royal Charter in 1995, when it became a full college of the University. It was founded in 1886 as a training college for Congregational Church ministers. It derives from Spring Hill College in Birmingham whose chief benefactors were George Storer Mansfield, Elizabeth Mansfield, and Sarah Glover. Mansfield became a Permanent Private Hall in 1955. Thereafter it expanded steadily both in its coverage of academic disciplines and in the numbers of graduates and undergraduates it admitted, while the proportion of the student body engaged in ministerial training declined. The granting of its Royal Charter therefore marked the culmination of a long period of development.
The original buildings were opened in 1889. New buildings, including student accommodation, were opened on the site in 1962 and 1993, and offsite annexes in 1997 and 2002. Unlike most Oxford colleges, it is not organised around a series of quadrangles; its buildings face onto a large open green.
The College is associated with the University's Rothermere American Institute, which was opened in 2001. It is the Oxford link College with the Europaeum - a network of seven leading European Universities.
