College arms: "Argent, on a saltire gules an escallop or, impaling or, three chevronels party per pale, the first and third azure and gules, the second gules and azure"
THIS College, originally called the House of Scholars of Merton, was founded in the year 1264 at Malden in Surrey for the support of its Scholars at Oxford, by Walter de Merton, sometime Chancellor of England, and afterwards Bishop of Rochester. The first body of statutes was given by the Founder in 1264, the second in 1270, and the third and last in 1274, in which year the whole community was permanently established at Oxford.
In 1882 the neighbouring institution of St Alban's Hall (said to date from the early part of the fifteenth century) was united with Merton, and its name is commemorated in St Alban's Quadrangle. The College was opened to women as well as men in 1979.
Under the present statutes there are ten classes of Fellowship: Professorial and Official Fellowships; Research Fellowships (including Senior Research Fellowships); Junior Research Fellowships and Visiting Research Fellowships; Special, Emeritus, Honorary, and Bodley Fellowships; and Sir Henry Savile Fellowships for occasional short-term tenure by distinguished scholars. The following Professorships are permanently attached to the College: the Linacre Professorship of Zoology, the Merton Professorship of English Language, the Merton Professorship of English Literature, the W. A. Handley Professorship of Psychiatry, and the Professorship of Mathematical Logic. In each year the College elects up to four Junior Research Fellowships tenable for three years.
Matriculated members of the College who are reading for a Final Honour School may be elected to awards after their first year of residence, in recognition of academic distinction. These awards may be Postmasterships or Exhibitions and are given for one year (or part of a year), and are renewable.
The College annually awards three or four Domus Graduate Scholarships, tenable for three years, to candidates beginning doctoral studies. The College also offers some further Scholarships, at graduate or undergraduate level, restricted to applicants from particular countries, or in other ways.
In all the College at present has about 310 undergraduates and 150 postgraduates in residence.
The corporate designation of the College is 'The Warden and Scholars of the House or College of Scholars of Merton in the University of Oxford'.
