College arms: "Argent, two chevronels sable between three roses gules, seeded or, barbed vert"

THIS college was founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and sometime Lord High Chancellor of England, for a Warden, seventy fellows and scholars, ten chaplains, three clerks and sixteen choristers. Its corporate designation is 'The Warden and Scholars of St. Mary College of Winchester in Oxford, commonly called New College in Oxford'.

Under the statutes of the College the fellowships are divided into five classes, namely Professorial Fellowships, Official Fellowships, Research Fellowships, Supernumerary Fellowships and Emeritus Fellowships. Professorial Fellowships are annexed to the Savilian Professorships of Geometry and Astronomy, the Wykeham Professorships of Logic, Ancient History, and Physics, the Professorship of Russian and the Goldsmiths' Professorship of English Literature.

In addition to the statutory fellowships, other research fellowships are attached to the College: the Astor Research Fellowship, the Todd-Bird Research Fellowship, the Juliana Cuyler Matthews Research Fellowship, the J. Arthur Rank and C. A. W. Manning Research Fellowship, the Esmee Fairbairn Research Fellowship, the W. W. Spooner Research Fellowship, the Weston Research Fellowship, and the G. H. Hardy Research Fellowship; there is also the Tang Lecturersbip in Law. The Harold Salvesen and the Christopher Cox Junior Fellowships are intended for young graduates living in College who can be associated with the undergraduate activities in the College and stimulate its academic life.

Scholarships and Exhibitions are offered as awards to undergraduates of the College who have gained distinction in the examinations of the University or of the College. In addition, the College has available, as a result of a number of benefactions, funds with which to make additional awards or prizes to undergraduate and graduate members in residence and for the alleviation of hardship.

The choir consists of a chaplain, eight academic clerks, six lay clerks, and sixteen choristers.
