In November 1937 the University accepted an offer from Lord Nuffield to found a college 'to encourage research especially but not exclusively in the field of social studies, and especially by making easier the co-operation of academic and non-academic persons'. In 1958 a petition was submitted to the Queen, who on 18 April 1958 granted a Charter. The Queen also, by Letters Patent dated 8 April 1958, authorized the College to use the arms of its Founder without difference. On 21 May 1963 Congregation approved the Statute making Nuffield College a full College of the University, and this was approved by the Queen in Council on 20 December 1963.
The Statutes make provision for the following fellowships:
(a) Official Fellowships, tenable by those responsible for research and supervision in the College and the holders of such college offices as the Governing Body shall from time to time determine at a Stated Meeting.
(b) Professorial Fellowships, tenable by University Professors, University Readers, and holders of other University offices which are declared by any University statute or decree to qualify the holder for a Professorial Fellowship.
(c) Faculty Fellowships, tenable by members of any Faculty in the University who are qualified to assist in furthering the objects of the College.
(d) Visiting Fellowships, tenable by persons competent to assist those engaged in the College and the University in research by giving them the fruits of their experience in practical affairs.
(e) Research Fellowships, tenable by persons who have conducted, or are likely to conduct, valuable advanced study or research and who undertake to pursue some course of advanced study or research in the College or in the University or (with the approval of the Governing Body) elsewhere.
(f) Professorial Visiting Fellowships, tenable by persons visiting the College for Periods of not more than two years who are qualified in furthering its objects.
(9) Supernumerary Fellowships, tenable by persons whose services as a fellow would be of advantage to the College
(h) Emeritus Fellowships, tenable by any person who has held the office of Warden or who, having held a fellowship in the College, has resigned from it after not less than fifteen years' service in the College (whether as a fellow or otherwise) or upon reaching the age of compulsory retirement prescribed in the Statute.
(i) Honorary Fellowships, tenable by distinguished persons.
The students of the College normally read for the degrees of D.Phil., M.Litt., or M.Phil., or are otherwise engaged in or contemplating approved research.
The Governing Body may extend the facilities of the College to those who are or have been Professors or senior members of the University of Oxford or any other university, or to those engaged or formerly engaged in one of the professions, in industry or commerce, in government or politics, or in other fields of practical affairs, and may give such persons the title of Associate Member and grant them rights, privileges, and emoluments. Associate Members are not members of the Governing Body.
