College arms: "Per pale azure and gules, three lions rampant, two and one, argent, on a chief per pale argent and or, in the first a rose gules, seeded or, barbed vert in the second a thistle of Scotland proper"

THIS college, originally Broadgates Hall, was re-founded in the year 1624 by James the First, at the costs and charges of Thomas Tesdale Esquire, of Glympton in Oxfordshire and Richard Wightwick, BD, Rector of East Ilsley, Berks. The new grant was for a Master, ten fellows, and ten scholars, or more or fewer: and obtained its name from William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, who was Chancellor of the University when it was re-founded. The last Principal of Broadgates Hall, Dr Thomas Clayton, Regius Professor of Medicine, became the first Master of Pembroke College.

The constitution of the College by Statutes of the Commissioners made in pursuance of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge Act, 1923, includes the following:

The college is to consist of a Master, Fellows, and Scholars and also Exhibitioners without limit of numbers.

The College awards Scholarships and Exhibitions to undergraduates who distinguish themselves in the course of their studies. In addition the College has a number of funds from which prizes and grants are made to undergraduates.

The corporate designation of the College is 'The Master, Fellows and Scholars of Pembroke College in the University of Oxford'.

In the following lists, the symbol
