College arms: "Or, a cross patonce gules cantoned by four Cornish choughs proper"

UNTIL it received its Charter of Incorporation and Statutes, so becoming a college, in 1957, St Edmund Hall was the last and oldest of those academical halls which first provided for the residence of scholars coming to the University. The name derives from the traditional association of its site with St Edmund of Abingdon (died 1240), Archbishop of Canterbury.

Membership of the College has been open to women since 1978, and there are some flats for married graduates.

The College offers a Junior Research Fellowship and a normal complement of open awards. It also offers Organ and Choral Scholarships, Music Bursaries, and various travel awards. There is endowment of awards by Frederick Brockhues for those reading for advanced degrees. There are also three substantial William R. Miller postgraduate awards. There are Fargher Bursaries for assisting the learning of a modern language, a Muriel Radford Memorial Prize for travel, and the Philip Geddes Memorial Fund supplies a very substantial Prize for work in Journalism.
