College arms: "Azure on a fesse or between in chief two unicorns' heads couped and in a base a coiled serpent argent three estoiles gules"

THE College was founded under the title of St Hilda's Hall by Miss Dorothea Beale, LLD, Principal of Cheltenham Ladies' College, who in 1893 bought 'Cowley House' and converted it into a Hall for Women Students. In 1896 the Hall was incorporated under the Companies Acts of 1862-90: a Governing Body was constituted, and recognition by the Council of the Association for the Education of Women in Oxford was obtained. In 1910 it was admitted by Decree of Convocation as a Recognized Society under the Delegacy for Women Students, and in June 1920 was admitted by decree to the privileges of Statt. Tit. XXIII Of Women Students. In 1921 the property known as Cherwell Hall was acquired, and in 1958 the adjoining building of Milham Ford. Four new blocks, the Wolfson and Garden Buildings, the Jacqueline du Pre Music Building and the Christina Barratt Building, were opened in 1964, 1971, 1995 and 2001 respectively. In March 1926 the College was incorporated by Royal Charter under the name of 'The Principal and Council of St Hilda's College, Oxford'. In 1955 a supplemental charter and new statutes were granted by which the Principal and Fellows became the Governing Body. In 1960, St Hilda's, in common with the other women's colleges, ceased to be a Society of Women Students and became a college of the University, with all its accompanying privileges. The corporate designation of the College is 'The Principal and Fellows of St Hilda's College in the University of Oxford'. The Statutes provide that the Principal, Fellows and Students shall all be women.

The College has a number of trust funds that provide open Scholarships and Exhibitions (awarded to members of the College after the First Public Examination), prizes, grants for undergraduate travel abroad in vacation, and research grants for graduate students. Graduate Scholarships and support grants to meet financial hardship are offered annually.
