College arms: "Azure, a cross patonce between five martlets or"

THE College was long said to have been founded by Alfred the Great. That is now discounted, but its historical origin is still ancient enough, since it goes back to the earliest endowment made specifically for a college of graduate scholars, in 1249, when William of Durham, Rector of Wearmouth, left a sum for the maintenance of ten or more Masters, living as a community. The corporate designation of the College today is 'The Master and Fellows of the College of the Great Hall of the University commonly called University College in the University of Oxford'.

The Governing Body of the College consists of the Master and Fellows. There are six established Professorial Fellows, the holders of the Chairs of Jurisprudence, Chinese, Theoretical Chemistry, Geology, Bioinformatics, and Neuroimaging. Certain of the fellowships are named either after the benefactors by whom they were established or after individuals whom they commemorate. The College also offers a Junior Research Fellowship in Arts and Sciences each year and a Harald Salvesen Junior Fellowship, from time to time.

Undergraduate bursaries are available for students who might otherwise be unable to come to Oxford. The College offers Choral and Organ Scholarships.

The College offers two G. A. Paul Memorial Scholarships (of annual value £200) each year to graduates of the College (including those reading for Honour Schools with Senior Status). Other graduate scholarships are also offered in conjunction with the University's Clarendon Fund Bursaries, or independently by the College.

Scholarships and exhibitions may be awarded at the beginning of each year on academic merit to undergraduates who have completed a year of residence. The College also makes annual instrumental awards to undergraduates in residence: these are renewable. Various scholarships and other funds for travel are also available.

In the following lists, the symbol
* after a person's name indicates that he or she is also a Fellow or Honorary Fellow of another college.
+ indicates the holder of a University or CUF post.
~ indicates the holder of a statutory professorship or readership.
$ indicates a former Rhodes scholar.
