ON 26 July 1966 Congregation, by decree, gratefully accepted benefactions from the Wolfson and Ford Foundations and established Wolfson College, at the same time appointing Sir Isaiah Berlin as its first President. The College incorporated Iffley College, which was established by the University in 1965 as a society through which men and women might be admitted to read for advanced degrees and diplomas of the University.
On 1 April 1981 the Queen granted a Charter under which the College was incorporated by the name and style of 'The President and Fellows of Wolfson College in the University of Oxford'. Under the Statutes, in addition to Ordinary Fellowships, the Governing Body elects to Professorial Fellowships holders of chairs allocated to the College and may elect holders of university offices which qualify for such fellowships; and in addition the Governing Body may elect to Extraordinary Fellowships any person of distinction whose association would be of value to the College. The Governing Body consists of the Ordinary, Professorial, Extraordinary and Senior Research Fellows, together with six members elected from among Supernumerary, Research, and Junior Research Fellows and Students.
The College is incorporated for the furtherance of learning and education, and to be a college wherein men and women may carry out advanced study or research. Under the Statutes the College is to have a special concern for the promotion of studies in the natural sciences. The College admits students to read for advanced degrees or diplomas in the University. Approximately half the fellows and students work in the natural sciences, the balance in all branches of the humanities and social sciences.
In addition to the Fellows who are members of the Governing Body, the College elects Research Fellows and Junior Research Fellows. These at present include Fellows in the Humanities, the Philosophy of Science, Social Anthropology, and Indology. Research Fellows are also elected from the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, which is associated with Wolfson College. In addition the College elects about twelve non-stipendiary Junior Research Fellows annually. The College elects each year Visiting Fellows and Visiting Scholars (up to a total of 55), who may from time to time include Industrial Fellows who are engaged in a joint research project with a University Department. At present these include Charter Fellows in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The College offers a small number of Studentships in conjunction with particular faculties and up to four College Fee Bursaries each year.
There is accommodation in or near the College for 242 fellows or students, comprising 164 single rooms, 44 flats for couples, and 35 houses for families with children.
