College arms: "Argent, two chevrons between six martlets, three, two and one, gules"
THE College occupies the site and some of the buildings of Gloucester College, which was founded in 1283 for monks from the Abbey of St Peter, Gloucester. and subsequently opened to monks from other Benedictine Abbeys studying at the University. The continuous history of the College as an institution begins with the foundation in 1560, in the same buildings, of Gloucester Hall, which enjoyed considerable independence and could present for degrees, but lacked the legal and other advantages of incorporation. In 1714 the College received its charter of incorporation under the name of Worcester College as a foundation for a Provost, six fellows, and six scholars under the will of Sir Thomas Cookes, Bt, of Bentley Pauncefote in the County of Worcester. It has subsequently benefited by endowments from a number of benefactors.
