1. Please would you increase the Warden's salary to £53,487 p.a. with effect from 1st December 2001, this being the sum determined by Professorial basic salary plus Schedule III allowance (see FC 95.87)
2. Please would you also add a monthly uplift of £424.96 for the next 39 months (from 1st December 2001) to reimburse the Warden for past underpayment

Calculation of salary adjustment required to reimburse Warden for underpayment since 1/10/98
| period | underpayment | Cumulative inc interest | No. of months | Months in year | Interest rate | Interest | |
| 1/10/98-1/4/99 | 2,112.00 | 2,112.00 | 6 | 12 | 5.00% | 52.80 | |
| 1/4/99-1/4/00 | 4,372.00 | 6,536.80 | 12 | 12 | 5.00% | 326.84 | |
| 1/4/00-1/4/01 | 4,503.00 | 11,366.64 | 12 | 12 | 5.00% | 568.33 | |
| 1/4/01-1/9/01 | 1,932.92 | 13,867.89 | 5 | 12 | 5.00% | 288.91 | |
| 1/9/01-1/12/01 | 1,171.25 | 15,328.06 | 3 | 12 | 5.00% | 191.60 |
So £5,328.06 is the accumulated shortfall to be paid over next 39 months in equal monthly instalments
Assume interest at 5% to be calculated on half that sum for 39 months:
Additional interest amounts to: £1,245.40
So total to be amortised is £16,573.46
Monthly uplift 1/12/01-1/3/05 £424.96

Dear Roger
I am afraid the interpretation of Schedule III allowance is not correct. In October, 1998 there was a major review (U of 0) of schedules of allowances for the heads of department. The number of schedules was increased from 4 to 6. In doing so the values were also increased by 10%. Therefore an equivalent of old schedule III is schedule V. We therefore need to revise our figures to reflect the correct situation.

Dear Diamond
Thanks for this - we have since spoken.
Just for the record, I have no doubt that the reason why the University revised its schedules in 1998 is that they realised Professors who were heads of department were falling behind compared with their equivalents in other institutions - hence the substantial increases in existing schedule allowances and the creation of two new schedules, 5 and 6. By the same token, the Warden's salary was falling behind, and in fact is still considerably below what, for example, St Peter's and Brasenose are advertising for new Heads of House (£60k plus housing). I shall be asking Finance Committee, next term, to review the Warden's stipend with a view to increasing it above the current formula of Professorial basic plus Schedule III allowance. But meanwhile please implement the adjustment that we have discussed - to restore the stipend what that formula provides and to reimburse the Warden for underpayment since 1998.
Many thanks
Roger

49. Warden-elect: terms of appointment
The Sub-Warden and Bursar reported that negotiations with the Warden-elect on the terms of her appointment were nearly completed. The main difference compared with the terms for the present Warden was that the College will have to make provision for the Warden-elect's pension. Fellows will have the opportunity of seeing the letter of appointment before it is sent. The cost of refurbishing the Warden's Lodgings is unlikely to exceed £10,000.
The Committee considered the report of it sub-committee on the remuneration of the Warden and Bursar. Following some detailed discussion the Committee decided to amend the recommendations of the sub-committee as follows:
Warden It is recommended that the Warden's stipend be increased by the addition of the Schedule III departmental allowance to give a total stipend of £40,038 with effect from 01.04.95. In addition the Committee recommends that the Warden should be entitled to a book allowance at the Tutorial Fellows' rate of £473 with effect from 01.08.95.
Bursar The Committee noted that Keble's single bursar establishment leads to a very heavy work-load and limited time during which the present Bursar was able to take leave. The Committee recommends that the College should look favourably on any request which the Bursar might make for extended leave of up to a term's duration, with the proviso that the College should appoint a Fellow as acting Bursar during this period.

Dear Diamond
Attached are the recommendations that were approved by Finance Committee (FC02.16) and GB (GB02.34), As the note recommends, all the revisions (including the Warden's salary) should take effect from 1-8-02, but at that time they should be adjusted in line with the annual rise in salaries.
Please would you let me have an amended stipends and allowances spreadsheet.
Many thanks
Roger
Note: The figures proposed below are at the level that would apply were they in force now: if they are not implemented until 1-8-01 they will at that point be uplifted in line with the general increases in academic stipends.
1. Academic allowances for Fellows should be increased from £573 p.a. to £750 p.a.
2. The stipend of the Sub-Warden should remain at £1,299 p.a. save that, if called upon to serve as Acting Warden for a period of more than a month the Sub-Warden's stipend should be quadrupled for the period of the Acting Wardenship.
3. The Senior Tutor's stipend should be increased to £6,000 p.a.
4. The teaching remission allowed to the Tutor for Admissions should be increased from 1.33/12ths to 3/12ths.
5. The stipend of the Dean of Degrees should be increased from £534 to £649.
6. The Warden's stipend be equivalent to that of a Professor receiving a Schedule II allowance (rather than, as currently, a Schedule III allowance). This represents an increase of some £2,200 p.a.
7. The above revisions should take effect from 1.8.02 and should be adjusted in line with the general uplift in academic salaries.
