Evidence (Red) File page 18, Letter from Andrew Malcolm to Henry Hardy, 14th October 1984

TEXT:

Henry Hardy, Oxford University Press, Walton Street, OXFORD OX2 6DP.

Dear Mr Hardy,

Thank you for your letter of 9th October and for your interest in Making Names; herewith the script. I am sorry if I appeared to misjudge OUP's publishing policy. I am also a little surprised that Angela Blackburn should have thought my proposal more suitable for the General Books rather than the Philosophy Department. I assume that this is because at present most philosophy books are not of general interest; it is my hope, of course, that Making Names will help to change that situation.

I would suggest that you use the previously submitted material to help you find your way about the script. I would also draw your and your readers' attention to the apology inside the front cover: the text is still in need of a good deal of work (I imagine a final six-month session locked in a room with a word-processor). There are one or two places where short passages or paragraphs are yet to be inserted; there are a number of ways in which I intend to highlight some of the sub-themes a little more carefully; and there is still a fair amount of sheer clumsiness that I must certainly polish up, particularly in the earlier and older writing. I just hope that you will make allowances for these shortcomings and that you will persevere with Making Names long enough to begin to recognise the ways in which its various threads weave together into what I believe to be the exciting tapestry of its climax.

Please take your time with it; I have!

Yours sincerely, Andrew Malcolm
