As agreed, I'm writing to confirm what I said on the phone when I rang in reply to your letter of 22 July (for which thanks).
I showed your letter to Richard Charkin, and he was concerned that you should not be too discouraged by his letter of 18 July - certainly not to the extent of feeling that it would simply be a waste of time to submit a revised typescript to OUP. He explained to me that, in writing as he did, he wanted to be sure not to raise your hopes too high, and so may have sounded more final than he intended; despite the real doubts he mentions, he does not at all wish to rule out acceptance of a revised typescript. This would have to be refereed, of course, as he says, but the outcome of this process is not being prejudged.
I hope that, even though there cannot be a contract at this stage, you will think it worth your while to undertake the revision. If you decide to go ahead, let me know, and I will try to explain to you in more detail what changes we feel are needed.
