Dear Andrew,
I have now read the rewritten chapters (en route, perhaps appropriately, from Oxford to Cambridge!). My opinion has of course no status in the matter any more, but they seem to me to be fine. I wasn't comparing them directly with the original version, so it may be that they seem better partly because I am coming at the material for a second time; but I don't think that can be a very large ingredient. Certainly it is better now that this section is split into two, and the style and level seem much more even. I congratulate you on cutting the length: I can't see that this has any untoward side-effects. It certainly makes the material more digestible.
Nicola will try to read the chapters soon, and will then write to you if she has anything to add. In the mean time I'm enclosing a photocopy of the material on which I have scribbled a few trivial comments. If you want any of them explained, do ask.
Did you decide not to try to insert subheadings? I note that there are some rows of asterisks, which we would realize as spaces.
Yours,
Henry Hardy
[Typed note added on internal OUP copy only:] Nicola: Let me know what you think. I've put the file in order - it was almost totally randomized (not by you!). H.
