TEXT:

Andrew Malcolm Esq.
7 Southover Street
Brighton BN2 2UA

Dear Mr Malcolm,

I have now had a chance to talk to Henry Hardy on his return from holiday. As he has told you himself, he is very disappointed that the revised typescript was turned down, but he has stressed to me that he accepts the decision, and that it was fairly reached.

His memory of his telephone conversations differs from yours on a number of points of substance and emphasis. In essence, he remembers being principally at pains to assure you that a revised typescript would receive a fair and thorough reading. At the same time, he was careful to make clear that a decision to publish must remain conditional on approval of the revised typescript.

It is true that, a year ago, Henry Hardy gave a premature indication of the Press's view of your book as it then stood, and that I had to step in and make clear that no contract could be offered without approval of a revised typescript. We regretted then, and regret now, the raising of your hopes on that occasion. Since then, however, and especially in respect of your work of revising the typescript, everyone involved has been careful not to give any assurances beyond that of preparedness to consider a revised version of the book.

In the circumstances that must, I fear, be the end of the matter as far as OUP is concerned. We shall of course be happy to forward your typescript to any other publisher you name.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Charkin
