Dear Mr White,
I am replying to your letter of 26 August to the Secretary to the Delegates of Oxford University Press.
While we understand and regret your client's strong feelings in this matter, we must insist once again that no contract was entered into to publish his book, which we have now declined; and that our decision is final.
It may perhaps be worth pointing out that your client did not at the time dispute our decision of July 1985 not to offer a contract before we had had a chance to assess a revised typescript. It was only after being told, in May of this year, that the revised typescript did not in our view represent a sufficient improvement to warrant acceptance that the claim was entered that a contract had existed all along.
However this may be, we repeat that no contract exists. Even if it had done, it would of course have been subject, like all our contracte, to approval of the finished typescript.
Yours sincerely,
Richard Charkin
