Evidence (Delegates) item 3: Part-transcript of telephone conversation between Andrew Malcolm and Doctor R. H. Lonsdale, of Balliol College, Oxford, 4th May 1989

Doctor Lonsdale was a Delegate of the Press in 1985 and is listed in the minutes as having been present at the Delegates' meeting of 23rd July 1985.

Lonsdale: I was responsible for books in English, which was my field. I'd be struggling to remember what happened in particular cases with the English books, I'm afraid, there were just so many. At a particular meeting you might have 70 or 80 titles go in front of you,

Malcolm: If I may just interrupt, this was going to be published by the General Books Division or Department. It wasn't an academic text, so it was coming under General Books. Would there have been a lot of General Books discussed at any one meeting, or were they comparatively thin on the ground?

Lonsdale: General Books, yes, they've collapsed that distinction now I think. All books have to appear in some form before the Delegates. The General Books in those days would certainly be listed. [his emphasis] They probably wouldn't be discussed if the case was clear...
