Diary Monday June 10th 2002I have no idea how I am going to last the week. But I am going to try. Thanks to all of you who supported the events. Monday night was a resounding success. Helzaboppin, Saskia and Humdrum and Vivant in the Church all had a good (excellent turn out) and the A Capella session in the Crown was pure magic. I first went and saw Clive and Mark in Vivant perform, what can only be described as relaxing music in St Marys Church. The acoustics were incredible it makes you think back what people must of done before PA systems. Well there were no wires for a start. No people asking for a little more “top” or less “middle”. Just turn up and play wonderful music. I must admit there was a short break while Mark set his music stand. Tea was served at half time and I had a chance to talk to Clive. This music comes from a variety of places.. But you would associate the sound with the music of Briton a certain region in France. But the routes of it span all of the United Kingdom. I then popped into see my old friends Helzaboppin. I must admit I don’t always see these guys in suites. But boy can they swing. A Lot of the brass arrangements are done by Nick Cottage, the trumpet player. They are so tight and obvious example of what can happen when you rehearse. (Not something I do very often). Just up stairs from there Marquee in the Oak room was HUMDRUM + SASKIA TOMPKINS. Wow what a transformation of the Cock Hotel. There was beautiful drapes all over the walls and a distinct eastern smell of incense mixing with the music. See the picture to see you what you missed. I must admit then I thought I had earned me crust as a journalist.. and decided to top up my specific gravity in the A Capella session in the Crown. I enjoy this stuff. One of the nicest things about an A Capella session is that you don’t have to find some where to stick your banjo case. Mind you I always get plenty of helpful suggestions when I do take it. There was a couple of contingents of Barbershop quartets (but there were ten of them?) and the hardened folkies like my self. One of the many highlights was Roddy singing Ol Lang Syne.. and I did a song about Marine Archaeology. But that’s another story.
