HOTTBAP 2002 Report
By James Ewins

Ahem. Firstly and most importantly - it was a very entertaining day. Good to see folks and indulge in retail therapy. Many thanks to Behind The Lines for running the tournament and for my losings. Very good job much appreciated.

Playing under V1.0 was more of a change then I thought - wouldn't have used the Artillery if I'd remembered quite how crap they were! Never mind eh, doubt it would have any difference. Pre game warm up consisted of much coffee and being laughed by all and sundry due to an acute hangover. Some of us will still play despite Friday night poisoning, Sebastian.

Game 1, still subhuman even by my low standards, was against a dwarven army. My butt was duly kicked. The Shooters crumbled, the Lurkers never turned up, I killed a Cleric before succumbing to a 45 - 3 loss. First game to finish I think! Entertaining game, I should have stayed defending on the hill and not ventured forth. Ho hum.

Game 2. My memory is a bit wobbly over which was two and which was three. I think this was Tim and the Lizardmen. 42 - 6, highlights of the game being his Hordes refusing to even recoil before 4 Shooters having a go. My general was caught between two giant turtles. Funny how often that happens... splat. Next. Again good fun.

Lunch was mainly coffee, and a wander to spirit games to examine the toys and bubble-wrapped young women. Bought an excessively big Walker for the expanding German army. Staggered back.

Game 3. The Inuit (not Eskimos, as I was told). Watched as the opposing battle line shuffled nervously to avoid Behemoth v Artillery, or shaman vs. anything. The shaman (who did look a little like a giant rabbit) did little other than scowl at the cleric and paladin. The two polar bears attacked the Shooters, they crumbled, the Lurkers never arrived, 48-0. A triumph on my part, it couldn't get any worse. We had enough time for a "friendly" game, which was tighter - Behemoth fighting my stronghold, my Paladin fighting shaman general (caught the bugger in the end!) with 10AP down on each side. Still lost.

Game 4. The Final Showdown. Me and Jay fighting for last place, failing to keep a straight face at all - the most entertaining game of the day. Some hidden competitive synapse fired and Jay placed two items of impassable going in the centre of the board, and then proceeded to trounce the shooter based army with an entirely mounted force. I did take down a Flyer and a Hero before the inevitable 12AP were lost, for a total of 15 out of 192 points. The evening was spent losing other games with Behind the Lines. I will never take a Shooter based army to a competition again - everyone I fought had enough mounted troops for it to really smart....

But very good fun, and three new armies bought. With less Shooters...

And Steve will have to explain "Sneaky barsteward move of the event goes to James... he can tell you all about it...I just laughed all the way home." Because I have no idea what he's referring to....
