Beowulf/Eaters of the Dead
A
Scenario for ‘Hordes of the Things’
By
Thomas Boraud

This scenario is inspired by the palimpsest of Beowulf by Michel Crichton. The interest is you can play it whatever is your interpretation of the myth.

Set-up

A waterway on the trolls/wendols side.

Mountain, woods and rough areas.

Both strongholds are present.

The Wendols are the attackers.

Geats

Hrothgar, Horde general @ 1 pts                                      1

Beowulf/Bulywif, Hero @ 4 pts                                        1

Ibn Fahdlan, Sneaker @ 3 pts                                           1

Beowulf/Bulywif companions, Blades @ 2 pts                   8

Stronhgold: Heorot, the Golden Hall of Hrothgar, of course!

Hrothgar is graded as horde because of his efficency in the epic and the novel. He really needs to be protected!

Wendols/Trolls

Grendel/the chiefs of the Wendols, Behemoth or Hero general @ 4 pts                 1

The mother of Grendel/the Wendols, Magician @ 4 pts                                        1

Mounted Wendols/big Trolls, Beasts @ 2 pts                                                       4

Foot Wendols/Trolls, Hordes @ 1 pts                                                                  8

Stronhgold: The Troll/Wendol's lair nearby the sea.

One option is to switch the general from Grendel to his mother. I prefer this solution, but in the novel the Wendols stop after the dead of the male and not of the female.

The foot are classified as hordes to simulate the feeling of numbers given by the novel. To keep the spirit of the novel, the player should have one troll and one neanderthal army ready and reveal the nature of his army at the last moment. For the same reason, an optional rule is that he write on a secret paper who is the general and reveals it only when necessary (i.e when it dies). He thus have to be careful when he counts his pips if he wants to deceive his opponent for a long time.
