Berkeley
2004 Report
By Richard Tyson
I must just say that the HOTT highlight of my weekend was not my winning one battle, but the game I played with Seb. I used Seb's Gloranthan Elves Army, and he used Simon Miller's Gloranthan army with the huge hand-made crimson bat. Seb won, but it was very closely fought - both sides had lost ten points so next kill clinched it. The best bit of the battle for me was the moment when the Crimson Bat swept into the rear of my Shooter General, who turned to face and promptly dispatched it :) The only time in the competition that the dice really favoured me!
I'm not good at keeping records during the competition, but there were several other classic games. The usual fun one with James. A real pain of a game as 'the ghost gamer' against Tony Horobin. I won this eventually after about four false conclusions. This was towards the end of Sunday and we were both tired and had possibly drunk too much. At one time I thought poor Tony's head was going to explode as things seemed to get more and more confused.
My own sportsman award was given to Owein Mason. Nine years old I think, he remained happy and cheerful throughout the weekend, and was a more gracious winner (yes he thrashed me) and loser than some much older players I've met over the years.
As I said before, for sheer fun this was my best Berkeley yet. Graham, no matter how much work you've got on next year, make Towse do it all :)
