THE GREAT COMPANY
by Richard Bodley Scott
Here is a semi-historical army list for the Great Company, a mercenary company operating in Italy in the mid 14th century. Its leader, Werner Duke of Ürslingen, had the device "The Enemy of God, of Goodness and of Mercy" on his silver breastplate. The condition of the country over which his forces passed testified to their adherence to their leader’s motto. “Nothing was to be seen but slaughters, plunders and burnings. So that except a very few places of strength, there was not a town or village which was secured from suffering and miserable destruction.”
