Grenadiers
Note, Grenadiers may be thought of as "competitors" to Paul Grace’s "Extraordinaries".
Version 2, results of detonation modified, movement reduced to that of Artillery, cost discounted to 2AP (so that you may support your entire battle line with Grenadiers and still include high value elements).
Troop Definition
Grenadiers, including all users of unusual, short range missile weapons and minor spells that fight in support of other troops instead of in the line of battle. In battle they stand immediately behind the troops they are supporting, prepare their missiles/spells and then work their way forward to where they can discharge their weapons without toasting too many of their own side.
Historical examples would include Byzantine troops with fire syphons and the Maltese irregulars throwing bombs and fire pots in support of the Knights of St.John at the siege of Malta as well as actual grenadiers from around the time of Marlborough. Fantasy examples would include Games Workshop Skaven with poison wind globes or Warpfire throwers.
Night Goblin (ball and chain) Fanatics could be included in this category even though "in reality" the fanatics are deployed in front of the troops they supporting (think of the fanatics element as the fungus brew handlers and "trainers").
The equipment used by Grenadiers is bulky and awkward to carry as a result they more at the same rate as Artillery rather than foot. Note the Grenadiers themselves may be carrying all the equipment in which case they will need to be accompanied by wagons or slaves carrying "reloads" (and apprentice wizards don’t like getting their feet wet).
Points Cost
Grenadiers cost 3 2 army points per element.

Combat
Grenadiers give a bonus similar to that given by a second rank of spearmen.
Foot elements add +1, if supported by a Grenadiers element which is contiguous behind facing in the same direction, and neither is in bad going, nor is being shot at or bespelled.
Note that as Heroes are "mounted" they may not be supported by such dastardly tricks as Grenadiers!
If forced to fight for themselves Grenadiers are in trouble! Their combat factor is +2, the same as an (untrained) Horde. (Grenadiers count as "other foot".)
Optional Rule
In the case of a drawn combat involving Grenadiers if in close combat and their totals are odd, not even numbers then the Grenadiers blow themselves up and all other participants suffer a minor defeat.
