Macclesfield 2003 Report
By Eddy Richards

Let me add slightly belated thanks to Jez and co for a great tournament. Very enjoyable - seven games played (including two friendlies), lost five of them!

Best game: Against the guru, Alan, at the dregs end of the table. This was a seesaw battle which could easily have gone either way; it came down to a question of whether he could kill off my left flank before I flattened his left.

Best moment: Killing Benedict's general in a friendly game. I did think it would give me a chance as he would need lots of pips to move his army around after that, but he then rolled 6's for the next two pip rolls. Chalk up another loss. I have a feeling I was using a spear support to my spear general in the rough, which shouldn't be allowed, so I probably should have lost earlier on anyway!

Most disappointing (and quickest) defeat: Against Paul Smith's Hammer Hordes of Horror army. I thought I was doing quite well when suddenly, on turn 2, a flyer with flank support from an aerial hero zapped my magician general lurking in the rear. Oops. Actually, as someone has mentioned the 'no flanking move unless you start entirely from the flank' rule I am wondering if the attack was quite legal - it wasn't anything I considered at the time, and can't remember the exact positions anyway, but who knows? Glory could have been mine! Serves me right for leaving me general lurking there in a cowardly way; I won't do that again in a hurry. In any case, losing quickly gave me more time to inspect the excellent painting and specially made terrain (including a stronghold with a suitably spooky soundtrack - nice one!).

Overall: Great to meet everyone and play good-natured but competitive games, and to see some superb painting and imaginative armies.

Finally, well done Benedict, and once again thanks to all those who organised things; also Alan who very sportingly was happy to give answers to rules queries even while engaged in combat himself - no doubt this distraction contributed to his lowly position in the table (although I'm not sure the Knights of Simba were ever likely to be a tournament winning creation. They were nice to look at, though).
