(Wide angle: The first light of dawn sees the lizardmen troops streaming out of their stronghold, preparing the defense against the hated human invaders. Zoom to lizardman leader).
The lizardman general surveyed the battlefield from atop his trusty triceratops. He turned to his warchief. "Ssssssss!" ("The river across our front, and the woods in the center, will channel the human's attack. They may cross the river to our left; post our hunting packs and some expendable infantry in the woods there, just in case. It is more likely, however, that they will come across the bridge, trying to take our beloved home. Post a few more infantry in the center and far right, to extend our line. My personal guard, and the other triceratops riders, will form line before our city, beside the road. We shall face the best these evolutionary latecomers have--and crush them!") (Lizardman is an admirably compact language).
The humans advanced along the road through a ruined town. The vanguard, deadly bowmen all, quickly drove back the lizardmen foot who moved to block the bridge. The reptilian general sent fast riders in for a slashing attack, but they too were met by a storm of arrows and forced back. The triceratops guards lumbered forward, to within striking distance of the human column.
The Black Leather Band, grim halbardiers and axemen, spread out into line and faced off against the lizardman general. A trumpet sounded, high and sweet, and a banner blazed crimson in the morning light, off to his left. The general looked, just in time to see a mighty human warrior step out from among the black-clad foe. The man's sword rose--and, incredibly, a triceratops fell, skull cloven by the one blow. The behemoths fell back before the human onslaught, and the general was forced to fall back as well.
(Montage: fast riders charge human archers, and fall back. Five halbardiers hack down a wounded triceratops. A countercharge breaks into the wall of blades, forcing them to retreat. Reptilian infantry on the far right dies in droves, but manage to hold the axemen and archers in play. End montage with a cut to The General).
"Ssssss!" ("To me, warriors! One more charge! With their champion fallen, they will be helpless! Kill _that_ one! Charge!") The mighty beasts lowered their snouts and surged forward, unstoppable. The human warrior raised his gore-smeared blade....and fell, a lizardman javelin through his kidney. A moment of horror, and the Black Leather Band broke and fled. The lizardmen roared in triumph, their behemoths rampaging among the axemen, trampling the fallen.
But suddenly, in their moment of triumph, they heard the humans' trumpet call. The reptilian pursuit had taken them away from the road, and squadron after squadron of horsemen raced towards the stronghold, hammering through the lizardman infantry still streaming from the gates.
"Ssssss!!" ("The citadel! Defend the citadel! Turn, you fools, turn!") A quick charge caught the human stragglers and shattered them, but the knights of the rear guard couched their lances and charged fearlessly, hurling back the general's weary troops. At the walls, horsemen made short work of the light-armed reptilians issuing from the gates. Scaling ladders rose. The ram boomed against the gate. The lizardman general frantically issued orders, trying to gather his troops, but it was too late. The enemy banner flew over the gates; and a moment later, smoke began to rise from the city.
"Sssss!" ("Darn!")
My son Joshua, age nine, played his first battle in the WRG rules family as the lizardman general. I gambled on being able to cross the bridge before he could react--realizing just a little late that HOTT does not have march moves. Due to some spectacular dice on my part, I was able to expand my bridgehead and, when my Hero fell, my knights slipped through the gap left by pursuing Behemoths and raced to the stronghold. More spectacular dice, and I captured the citadel and won. He had me within one element of defeat, however.
Lessons:
1) Know the rules you're playing.
2) Enough sixes makes up for a multitude of failings.
My army was the Generic Medieval from the book with Blades. Joshua used the Generic Reptilian except he replaced one Rider with Knights and the Flyer with Beasts.
