Over the years, fantasy wargamers have come to expect certain 'standard' armies, such as Dwarves, Orcs and Elves. These crop up throughout fantasy literature and the games based on it, albeit in different forms. James Ewins and I have produced some lists for Games Workshop's Epic range. Playtesting, and further research has led to the following updated lists which detail an army for each of the major races in 'Space Marine'. Phil Saunders has provided these lists for Daemonhunters.
Steven Goode has put together a few ideas for an army based on the RIFTS role-playing game.
Alan Patrick's Xena, Warrior Princess list provides a good example of an Amazon army. An additional list by Steve Walker offers an alternative approach.

The members of the HOTT mailing list have had some extensive thoughts on skeleton armies. Joel Gregory has derived such an army from Revelation 6:8.
