Sold 'Hordes of the Things' Armies

Dark Elves

List

TypeTroopsCost
1Magician General @ 4APSorceror King4
7Blades @ 2APWarriors14
1Sneaker @ 3APAssassin3
1Horde @ 1APLesser Demons1
1Warband @ 2APAllied Men2

Notes

This army has undergone many changes in make-up since I built it, but I sold it in a very basic form, as I dod not want to sell the Dragon or God that have, at various times, been part of it. The army is loosely modelled on the Melniboneans in Michael Moorcock's Elric series.

All of the elves are from Irregular Miniatures Dark Elf range. They are a mixture of swordsmen, hammermen and spearmen. The Magician general is from the same range; the Witch with Sword. The general is accompanied by a Dark Elf standard bearer and another Warrior. The demons are Citadel nurglings, and the allied men are Irregular Celts. This army was sold at Valhalla in Farnborough in June 2000.

Lizardmen

List

TypeTroopsCost
1Magician General @ 4APLizardman Sorceror4
6Spears @ 2APLizardmen Warriors12
1Knight @ 2APFast Dinosaur Rider2
1Behemoth @ 4APLarge Dinosaur4
1Flyer @ 2APPteradactyl Rider2

Notes

Citadel make a rather nice Pterodactyl and rider as well as splendid dinosaur; I had these and wanted an army to make use of them. The bulk of the Lizardmen are from Irregular Miniatures - the Warriors are the ones with spear. I chose Spears as a classification because I wanted an army based around this troop type. The Magician is the Chief plus a Standard Bearer and Drummer. The fast Dinosaur Rider is a Citadel Skink mounted on a plastic velociraptor I got with some sort of 'Jurassic Park' promotion. The army was sold at Valhalla in Farnborough in June 2000.

Nomadic Goblins

1Knight General @ 2APGoblin Khan2
1Behemoth @ 4APWar Wagon4
1Flyer @ 2APHang Gliders2
1Magician @ 4APShaman4
6Riders @ 2APGoblin Boar Riders12

Notes

There were three purposes to building this army. firstly, I wanted an army made up primarily of Riders. Secondly I wanted an army that made use of Irregular Miniatures' Goblin Boar Riders. Thirdly, I had some figures I wanted to make use of. The Khan is mounted on a 25mm Citadel Biovore from the Warhammer 40K range. The Biovore's gun has been removed and replaced with a saddle. The Khan himself is an Irregular Miniatures Goblin, the driver is a Citadel Snotling. The War Wagon is the Citadel Snotling Attack Cart, with most of its original crew. The Shaman is one of the crew of the cart; the one with the pointed hat. The Hang Gliders are Boogers from an Australian company called Inquisition Miniatures. The Goblins on Boars are, as previously stated, by Irregular Miniatures. This army was sold to a member of the Staines Wargamers in June 2000.

Dwarves

List

TypeTroopsCost
1Knight General @ 2APChief on Bear2
1Knights @ 2APBear Riders2
4Knights @ 2APSheep Riders8
6Blades @ 2APDwarves with Axes or Mattocks12

Notes

I bought the figures for this army whilst on holiday in Australia in 1998. They are all made by Reaper Miniatures, and are made up of a small part of the range. The Knights are mounted either on large bears or bighorn sheep. All of the figures are nice, but are 'large' 15mm, like Irregular Miniatures' fantasy stuff, which means that the Dwarves are as tall as humans made by companies like Peter Pig, or even Irregular's historical ranges. This lack of compatbility with 'real' 15mm ranges was a primary reason for selling this army to a member of the Staines Wargamers in June 2000.

Angband (Orc)

List

TypeTroopsCost
1Hero General @ 4APBalrog (Gothmog)4
1Behemoth @ 4APTrolls4
1Beast @ 2APWolves2
1Rider @ 2APWolf Riders2
10Hordes @ 1APOrc Warriors10
1Flyer @ 2APBats2
Stronghold: Dark Tower

Notes

An army based upon that of Morgoth in JRR Tolkein's 'The Silmarillion'. The predominant race is Orcish, but most of the points are spent on the impressive support troops. The Balrog is rated as a ground based Hero as this seems to best fit their capabilities in the book; there is no evidence for them being able to fly or cast spells.

This army is in 15mm. The Balrog is the Chaos Warrior from the Citadel Miniatures 'Talisman' range, but with the shield removed. The bats are also from Citadel. All other figures are from Irregular Miniatures. The Trolls are from their Creatures range, as are the Wolves. The Wolf Riders and most of the Hordes come from the Orc infantry, but some of the Hordes are Goblins with Hand Weapons. This army was sold at Overlord in Abingdon in March 2003.

Wood Elves

List

TypeTroopsCost
1Shooter General @ 2APWood Elf Lord2
7Shooters @ 2APWood Elf Archers14
4Lurkers @ 1APWood Elf Ambushers4
2Beasts @ 2APBig Cats with Handlers4
Stronghold: A wooded glade, suspiciously similar to that being used by Catherine's Ent army.

Notes

I have fancied doing a Wood Elf army for a while now; I wanted an army that was vulnerable in the open but good in closed terrain and one based around Shooter and Lurkers seemed the answer. Virtually all of the figures are, surprise, Irregular Miniatures, and most of them are the Elf Archer. There's enough variety in the figure poses of the one catalogue code to keep the army looking interesting though. The general's element has an Elf Standard Bearer and Armoured Elf to distinguish it, as well as an archer to justify its classification. The Hunting Cats are sabre-tooth tigers from Chariot Miniatures. The Wood Elves' stronghold is the Grove of Trees used by Catherine's Ents. This army was sold to a member of the HOTT mailing list.
