Steel Mercenaries Fighting in Ancient Greece – Part 4
A HOTT
Battle Report
By Alexei Gartinski

But then finally the Macedonian Dragon started making the difference, having quickly dispatched two Greek Sp across the River Stix…

The luck seemed turning Macedonian way. First they rolled 6 PIPs. Their Dragon started turning the Greek battleline. Then the Macedonian General started smashing the Greek Crusher Behemoth…

And then the disaster stroke! The Greek Flyers outflanked the only remaining Macedonian Horde, and it died on recoil! … Yes, I have forgotten to “resurrect” the first Macedonian Horde… It was all over for the descendants of Alexander the Great!

Conclusions

Both sides soundly avoided any bad going and went straight into a forward clash. In the end it was a pretty close encounter: despite their initial success (they were leading 10 to 0 APs), the Greeks lost 4 Spear elements (8 APs) and could have been massacred, if only I remembered to resurrect that Horde…

Lessons Learnt

  • Always resurrect Hordes in time!
  • Behemoths are not as tough as they look.
  • Double-ranked Spear are as tough in HOTT as they are in DBA.
  • Flyers are good for blocking ZOCs and killing isolated enemy elements.
  • Don’t rely too much on Dragons: they may never come.
  • Dragons are fragile: they fight with no overlaps and can be sent away by anyone simply beating them. Use them mainly when they can easily double the opponent.
