Armies based on David Eddings' Trilogy 'The Tamuli'
By Bill Bennett
ELENE ARMY
The following list is based largely on the escort accompanying Queen Ehlana of Elenia on her sojourn to the Tamul Empire.
Stronghold: A pavilion on a low hill surrounded by a palisade and ditch.
|
Knight General (Sir Sparhawk and other Pandion knights) @ 2 AP |
1 |
|
Knights (Cyrinic, Alcione, and Genidian knights) @ 2 AP |
3 |
|
Riders (Peloi light cavalry) @ 2 AP |
4 |
|
Blades (Atan warriors) @ 2AP |
4 |
Alternatives: Artillery (Khalad's improvised giant bolt-thrower or Sir Bevier's catapults) @ 3 AP, Magician (group of Styric mystics) @ 4 AP, Shooters (dismounted knights with longbows) @ 2 AP, Sneakers (band of thieves, including Stragen, Talen, et al.) @ 3 AP.
Notes: The Pandion knights of Elenia are described as wearing black-enameled plate mail with silver surcoats and embossed black shields. The Cyrinic knights of Arcium wear white surcoats over brightly burnished silver plate armor. The Alcione Knights of Deira have particularly bulky-looking, dark steel plate mail and wear sky blue surcoats. The Genidian knights of Thalesia wear chain mail with conical helmets and green surcoats. They are all primarily armed with lance, sword and shield, though some used axes as their preferred melee weapon. The Peloi are described as bald-headed, dressed in leather, and armed with small round shields, sabres, and spears. The Atans are very tall with dark complexions and hair, and wear short, black leather kilts, black half-boots and burnished steel breastplates; they are described as being something akin to walking armories, each individual armed with an array of his or her favorite weapons. Unlike the church knights and Peloi, all Atans, male and female, are warriors. Styric magicians can also be both male and female and are described as generally smaller of stature than Elenes with dark hair and in white robes.
ARMY OF THE CYRGAI
This list represents the force that attacked the Elenes in Astel, about half of which consisted of ancient warriors summoned out of the past by the god Cyrgon. As they were only encountered as attackers, no stronghold is necessary.
|
Spear General (Cyrgai spearmen led by an ancient hero) @ 2 AP |
1 |
|
Spears (Cyrgai spearmen) @ 2 AP |
5 |
|
Riders (Cynesgan cavalry) @ 2 AP |
6 |
Notes: The Cyrgai are Bronze Age warriors who are described as wearing breastplates and horsehair crested helmets and carrying large round shields and 12' long spears. The Cynesgan horsemen wear flowing, black robes and cloth headdresses and fight with sabres.
TROLL ARMY
This list represents the force that attacked the Elenes in the lands of the Atans. Again, no stronghold is given as they were only seen as attackers.
|
Magician General (black-robed figure in a ball of purple light) @ 4 AP |
1 |
|
Behemoth (giant lizard, probably a dinosaur summoned from the past) @ 4 AP |
1 |
|
Warband (loose groups of trolls) @ 2 AP |
8 |
Notes: Readers familiar with the story know that the magician was actually an illusion created by the traitorous sorcerer Zalasta, but it seems best for the game to treat him as an actual being. The warband designation for the trolls is something of a compromise. While nine-foot tall, shaggy, brown-furred creatures of tooth and claw might well seem like behemoth units, an army of them wouldn't be legal and they performed in battle much like the first sentence description of warband in the rules as "...wild irregular foot that rely more on a ferocious impetuous charge than on mutual cohesion [or] individual skills..."
ARMY OF KLAEL
This is a generalized list representing various forces made up of the troop types below that engaged the church knights, the Atans, and the Peloi on separate occasions. Stronghold: A cave set in a hillside, whose entrance is through a steel door that resembles a modern airlock.
|
Blade General (fearsome warriors summoned from a world called Arcera) @ 2 AP |
1 |
|
Blades (more steel-clad Arceran warriors) @ 2 AP |
9 |
|
God (Klael) @ 4 AP |
1 |
Alternatives: Riders (Cynesgan cavalry) @ 2 AP, Spears (Cyrgai infantry) @ 2 AP, Hordes (Zemoch peasants armed with farm implements) @ 1 AP.
Notes: Klael appeared as a massively huge, black dragon. The Arceran warriors summoned by Klael wore close-fitting steel armor with helmets in the shape of various fantastic beasts and were quite tall. They also shed yellow blood and had difficulty breathing normal air, retreating into their caves to breathe concentrated swamp gas when winded.
