I used to do a lot of role-playing, but miniature wargaming has pretty much taken over in the last ten years or so. Recently, though, a resurgence of interest in 'Doctor Who' in our household led me to discover the game 'Time Lord', designed for role-playing in the universe developed for that series.
Originally published in book form in 1991, the rules are now available here.
The following scenarios and characters were written for use with 'Time Lord', but should be easily adapted to other systems. You will note that the level of detail varies for each scenario, and even within each scenario. This is just plain laziness on my part, but they should all be playable as written.
As with all things of this nature, they can be modified or adapted as you see fit. They assume nothing beyond what is found in the series as I know or remember it, or that cannot be found or derived from Jean Marc Lofficier's invaluable 'Universal Databank', 'Terrestrial Index' and 'Programme Guide'. At present they assume that the Doctor's personal time-line runs from 'An Unearthly Child' to 'Survival', but I have not ruled out the possibility of gaming with the Eighth Doctor. My personal view is that none of the 'Missing Adventure' novels have happened in this case, leaving the remainder of the Seventh Doctor's career open for scenarios. This is a personal bias, because I find that the books lack the character of the series.
When designing scenarios I have tried to keep to the style of the television series, rather than try to expand beyond it, as the novels have done. There should be nothing in them that you could not have seen on your TV screen had some script-writer come up with the storyline before I did. To my mind, part of the magic of 'Doctor Who' is not just the potential of the universe in which it is set, but the style in which it was presented to the viewer. I hope my scenarios and ideas capture that style and spirit, rather than expand the genre into just another philosophical navel-gazing exercise.
Note: There are in fact only two scenarios on this page at present. Others exist in various stages of completion, but have not been played yet. Once they have been I will post them.
Warning - If you intend being a player do not read the scenarios on this page!
The Ultimate Weapon - A distress signal from a deserted planet leads the Doctor and his allies into an encounter with old enemies.
Planet Of The Dragons - Arriving on the planet Tridenis Alpha, the Doctor must mediate between two opposing factions.
