History: Developed by the Nazis in the closing months of WWII, the Vergeltungswaffe-4 were the last in Hitler's series of vengeance weapons. Huge machines, some 75 feet tall, they were well-armoured, armed with rapid-fire cannon and controlled by a sophisticated robot brain. Originally designed to be launched en-masse against Allied forces, as the war in Europe drew to a close and German defeat became obvious, the robots were re-programmed and hidden, ready for the day that the Nazis would rise again. In 1954, however, one emerged from hiding in the Bavarian Alps and took to the air, speeding on a direct course for London. Over the North Sea it was engaged by the British, French and Dutch air-forces and, in a titanic struggle, was destroyed. Eleven years later, another emerged from hiding, but seems to have developed a fault on launch, as it immediately crashed into a mountain-side and was destroyed. Analysis of the wreckage showed that, although programmed to lie dormant until a signal was received, a fault in the software had caused its reactivation in response to an unknown stimulus. None have appeared now for over 40 years, but no-one knows how many of them are lying dormant under the Bavarian Alps and when the next one might activate.
