8th November 2009 : Spotted recently ...

Veteran Home Internationals ... both Christine Kiddier and Peter Nicholls were selected as reserves for the Veteran Home Internationals in W55 and M50 which are to be held in the Peak District on 14th/15th November. Bad luck to both of them for not making the final team, and lets home they both make the cut next year.

Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) ... David Abrams, who is now studying at Sheffield Hallam University, has been accepted for the 2009/10 TASS scheme. Well done David and lets hope for great things next year.

High Flyers on Everest ... Jeremy Wilde will be winging off to Nepal next week to take part in the 2009 Everest Marathon. Is there no race that this man won't try in the name of fun and adventure ? As well as Jeremy, another regular Thursday runner, Adam Stirk is also going. We wish them both a great trip and look forward to hearing all about the adventure in December.

These are the events that will count towards the club championships for the coming year. The best 4 will count.

8th November 2009 : SN Regional, Mytchett
14th November 2009 : SN/GO Schools Event, Wisley
29th November 2009 : SLOW Regional, Bramshott
3rd January 2010 : DFOK Regional, Chelwood Vachery, Ashdown Forest
16th January 2010 : SN/GO Schools Event, Long Valley
17th January 2010 : MV Regional, Sheepleas and Effingham
31st January 2010 : BKO Regional, Upper Star Posts
28th February 2010 : HH Regional, Burnham Beeches
23rd May 2010 : SO Regional, Arundel


With the current Regional Event setup I would suggest that you run in your age group as per normal.
In the District Events, you need to run the following, or run a higher course:-

Brown : M21+
Blue : W21+ and M45+ / M20-
Green : W45+ / W20-/ M60+
Light Green : M/W18-
Orange : W/M14-

The points are based on mins/km, and the best four will count, so you can run in as few as four events, or all of them, or anything in between. Good luck.

Einstein Crawford will perform the calculations on his Sinclair Scientific Abacus after each event so that the results can be put on our website as soon as possible ... we hope (subject to foreign sorties and labouring over a hot stove in preparation for Master Chef 2010).

2nd October 2009 : GO AGM ...Saturday 10th October

The Club Annual General Meeting will be held at (1pm lunch, for) 2-3pm on Saturday 10 October in the Function Room (Conservatory - welcomes children and dogs, as well as, I assume, adult orienteers) at the Rose and Thistle in Frimley Green. This venue has been carefully chosen to enable us to go to the SN/GO event at Frith Hill in the morning and relax nearby over lunch/AGM afterwards. You can't say your Committee doesn't care for you and look after your creature comforts!

So come along and join in the cut and thrust of orienteering politics - will the GO Chairman be challenged for the role next year? Will she survive if she is? And see the Club champions in the flesh being presented with their trophies.

If anyone would like to stand for a role on the Committee or nominate someone (with their agreement) please let me know by the 4th of October (Jeremy Wilde), Secretary. We do not have, and need, a Publicity Officer and the Junior rep would like to hand over to someone with more junior Juniors in the family. If there are no such nominations it is expected that the current committee members will be happy to continue in post. If there is more than one candidate for a post we will have the added excitement of a vote at the AGM!

30th June 2009 : Two down ... one to GO ...

Pete Couldery and his band of loyal helpers hosted a very pleasant evening at Stoke Park last Friday and we trust you all enjoyed the beautiful warm evening and fast running conditions. One more event left to go now in the clubs first summer series which have been masterminded by Pete, and from comments overheard from finishers, have been very well reveived and enjoyed. Well done Pete for a fine initiative and job well done. This is going to be a hard act to follow in 2010, but lets all support Pete and make sure it happens.

So make a date in your diary for Friday 17th July and another new venue at Shalford Park on the south side of town. Final details will appear on the web soon.

24th June 2009 : Another North Downs Relay victory for team GO

Team GO cruised to a fine victory on Saturday beating teams from SLOW, Haywards Heath Harriers and Canterbury Harriers. The winning margin this year was just over 36 minutes, and apart from a brief spell after leg 7, GO held the lead from Dover to Farnham. So well run to everyone who took part from all participating clubs. This years winning time of 16 hours 17 minutes and 31 seconds was the best for a few years.

Special mention must be made of Mike Scholes from Haywards Heath who despite being almost totally blind ran from Newlands Corner to the finish with his guide Tim Hicks. The pretty rough in places and very sandy ground proved to be a challenge for Mike, but if any one runner deserves mention it has to be Mike for such a very brave effort.

19th May 2009 : David Abrams reserve for World Junior Championships

Spotted on the BO web pages, David Abrams has been named as first reserve for the Junior World Orienteering Championships being held in Italy in July. David has has an up and down season with illness affecting him early in the season, but we all knew that he showed great potential from a tender age, and that there were good things to come. So well done David. We certainly don't wish injury on any of your fellow team mates, but it would be great if you did get to run in July. If you do make the start line this year, as they would say in Italy, runa likea the winda and enjoy the experience. GO will be rooting for you.

David has also been selected for a 2010 Pre-JWOC training camp in Denmark at the end of July, so if 2009 doesn't happen lets keep fingers firmly crossed for 2010.

17th May 2009 : Another British Title for James

James Crawford had continued his trophy collecting habit with another good run to claim the M50 title at the British Middle distance championships held last weekennd near Nottingham. James only took the lead in the closing stages in what would appear to have been a pretty tricky area, with many runners losing time with errors. You can read James's account by clicking here

11th May 2009 : GO Ladies show great form at the BOK National Event and JK

Not content with a win in the JK Sprint in Northumberland, Christine Kiddier continued in fine style to win W55L at recent National Event at New Beechenhust in the Forest of Dean. Also on the podium was Linda Pakuls who was an excellent 3rd on W50L. Linda led the eventual winner Elisabeth Dickson up to control 7 of 14, but Elisabeth had the better stamina over the second half and Sarah Howes sneaked in to snatch silver.

Place your bets now for top 3 positions in the National Rankings by the end of the season.

Team GO had a great weekend at this years British Championships with Christine Kiddier taking a fantastic 2nd place in W55L behind Sarah Brown from SLOW. Christine was also 2nd last week at the HH National event. James's World Champion training regime seems to be paying dividends for Christine, so contact James if you want to get fit and start hitting the podium. Peter Nicholls also had two 3rd places in consecutive weeks in a very classy M50L field. Great running from them both.

On Sunday the venue moved to a new area at Beaulieu and Dibden which proved to be a very nice venue for the relays. Fast and close competition saw the GO M50's team of James Crawford, Alastair Doyle and Peter Nicholls win the title by just under 90 seconds, with the next 4 teams packing in the next 30 seconds. The GO team of Keith Tonkin, Pete Couldery and Mark Smith were not far back in 6th. Not to be outdone, the W50 team of Linda Pakuls, Jenny Nicholls and Christine Kiddier came a fine 4th in the ladies race and only just missed out on a podium place. Next year ...
