THE CROFT - LOOKING TOWARDS ST MARYS PARISH CHURCH

The avenue of chestnut trees was planted by 'The Friends of The Croft' after a successful High Court action to prevent the construction of an access road across the Croft to the shopping precinct.

Above Right - There used to be a pond on The Croft, located in the corner nearest to the shopping centre. This was enjoyed by the children of Aldridge for more innocent pastimes than is often seen today. The No. 6 Walsall Corporation bus is in the background on route to Sutton Coldfield. The church Lych Gate can be seen between the bus and the lamp post. Above Left - Who allowed a modern style bus shelter to be erected in the conservation area ?

Above Right - This view taken from by the pond on The Croft, showing some remaining cottages in Rookery Lane where the car parks are now, and the piece of waste ground that became known as the council 'dump' . Above Right - we can now 'dump' our empty bottles in the same place.
