Gianluca Vialli finished Chelsea's
top Premiership scorer for the 97/98 season, despite spending almost half
the season on the substitutes bench. Mark Hughes and Gianfranco Zola both
ended in joint second place, just a goal behind Vialli. Though Zola could
have taken top spot if Vialli hadn't claimed a touch, and the goal, on
his free-kick against Newcastle on his home début. Although the leading scorer didn't even hit double figures, there were enough goals scored by the team for Chelsea to finish a respectable 5th highest scorers with 58 goals. But erratic defending meant a very poor 6th highest goals against, even one of the teams relegated managed to concede fewer goals! |
