11.2116 - Prince Joachim shot himself, one of the reasons could have been his unhappy marriage to Marie Auguste. She had left their home about a year before the shooting due to the Prince's cruelty. However The New York Times reported Joachim was in financial straits and suffering from a nervous collapse due to protracted negotiations in arriving at a financial settlement with the Prussian State. It was also reported Joachim and his wife were divorced but I've been unable to find any supporting sources relating to any divorce. |

British title of Princess Marie Louise. The marriage of Princess Marie to Prince Aribert was declared "null and void" by his father on the pretext
that Princess Marie had deserted her husband, however in reality it was because Prince Aribert had been caught with another man. The New York Time reported at the time the couple had agreed a Judicial separation rather than a divorce. Birth registration of Princess Marie Louise |

| 24.7336 | Princess | Alexandra of Anhalt | 1868 | 1958 | Prince | Sizzo of Schwarzburg | 1860 | 1926 |
Sizzo was a son of Prince Friedrich Günther of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (1793-1867) by his second, morganatic marriage on 7 Aug 1855 to Gräfin Helene von Raina (1835-1860) (herself the daughter of a morganatic marriage, between Prince Georg of Anhalt-Dessau and Therese Emma von Erdmannsdorf). Helene was adopted by her uncle Prince Wilhelm of Anhalt on 1 Aug 1855, and given the title of Princess of Anhalt by another uncle
Duke Leopold IV Anhalt-Dessau. Helene gave birth to Sizzo and his twin sister Helene on June 2, 1860 and died 4 days later.Sizzo and his sister Helene were created prince/ss of Leutenberg in Rudolstadt on 21 June 1860. By a law, promulgated in 1896, Sizzo was recognized as the heir-presumptive to the principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and, by treaty with Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, to that principality also. In 1925 he succeeded his cousin Gunther Victor as Prince of Schwarzburg. Günther Victor had succeeded his cousin George Albert as Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt in 1890 and another distant cousin Prince Karl Günther of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen (1830-1909) (son of Prince Günther II Friedrich of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen (1801-1889) and his first wife Princess Marie of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt) (1809-1833), thus uniting the two lines and assuming the title Prince of Schwarzburg. I trust anyone reading this information has kept up with the story? |

| 24.8211 | Duchess | Victoria Marie of Mecklenburg-Strelitz | 1878 | 1948 | Count | Georg Jamatel | 1859 | 1944 | Victoria Marie had a baby out of wedlock in about 1897, the father being a footman in the employ of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz ducal family. Victoria Marie's baby was immediately adopted and she herself became estranged from her parents on account of the circumstances surrounding the baby. Victoria Marie married Count Jamatel in 1899 who was apparently an unsavory character. They divorced in 1908 not long after the death of her brother Karl Borwin who had suffered fatal injuries sustained in a duel with Count Jamatel. | 24.8213 | Grand Duke | Adolf Friedrich VI of Mecklenburg-Strelitz | 1882 | 1918 | Adolf Friedrich was the last Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz having committed suicide. Adolf Friedrich had a mistress, Italian opera singer
Mafalda Salvatini (1888-1971) by whom he had two sons
Rolf and Horst . For political reasons, the Grand Duke was to become betrothed to a princess (identity unknown). Before he could do so, he felt compelled to write a letter to his mistress asking her to release him from his vow to marry her. By the time her permission arrived, he had gone off on a solitary walk with his dog and shot himself. The couple's sons ended up in the United States under the surname Gerad. An article in the NY Times of 1912 mentions a rumour that Adolf Friedrich was to marry Princess Viktoria-Luise of Prussia. Another NY Times article mentions Adolf Friedrich had married morganatically and he was under prssure to devorce his wife in favour of a Royal Princeess which led to his suicide. |

| 24.8214 | Duke | Karl Borwin of Mecklenburg-Strelitz | 1888 | 1908 | One source mentions Karl Borwin died from injuries sustained in a duel with his brother-in-law Count Jamel. Whilst James Pope-Hennessy's Queen Mary biography mentions Karl Borwin died from heart disease which is similar to a NY Times article which mentions he died from rheumatic affection of the heart. Count Jamel was apparently an unsavoury character who married Karl Borwin's sister Victoria Marie in 1899, they divorced in 1908 not long after the death of her brother Karl Borwin. |
