Her husband Wilhelm Ernst was known to be a sadist and on the day of his abdication was advised he was the "most unpopular prince in Germany". Karoline and Wilhelm Ernst were married on 30 April 1903 and it was reported in July of the same year that Karoline had left her home and fled to Switzerland, in order, as she explains, "to escape from the tyranny of her surroundings." |

11.215 - Adolf was for a short time Regent of Lippe (1895-1897) which he assumed by force with the support Emperor Wilhelm of Germany. He was eventually forced to surrender the regency following a ruling by a tribunal of Arbitration presided over by King Albert of Saxony. The cause of the Regency was the death of Waldemar, Prince of Lippe (Lippe-Detmold) (1824-1895) who in name was succeeded by his brother Alexander (1831-1905). Alexander suffered from a mental illness necessitating a Regency to exercise power on his behalf. Princess Victoria was engaged to Prince Alexander of Battenberg (Prince of Bulgaria). Wilhelm Eugen was second pilot on a Luft Hansa (forerunner to the legally separate Lufthansa) air liner flying from Croydon to Amsterdam on 6 November 1929 which was carrying four crew and four passengers. The plane crashed in Foster Down near Caterham probably due to dense fog and low clouds and the pilot misjudging the height of trees. Three of the crew and three of the passengers were burnt to death at the scene. Lieut-Commander Kidston a passenger survived the crash without serious injury whilst Prince Wilhelm Eugen who initially survived the crash was seriously burnt and died the following day on 7 November.
