Elsie Dodman writes: Thank you to everyone for prompt payment
of 2008 subscriptions to the MAGNET magazine. I did not need to
remind anyone after all, because all were paid in before the February
church magazine was distributed.
The ongoing
debate about renaming Christmas as “Winter
Festival” resulted in many letters to the MAGNET editor.
The main feeling was of indignation, even outrage, at such a suggestion.
Here are a few comments against the idea:
“Christmas is the incarnation of God in Christ Jesus. It
is not a Winter Festival, since for Christians in many countries
it is not even winter, it is summer. This is being fostered on
the agenda of the “politically correct”. The church
may have hijacked “Winter Festival” centuries ago,
but this is now our heritage and the celebration of Christ’s
birth. Other faiths can and do mark their own religious festivals
on dates they choose. Christians do not seek to interfere or coerce
them and they appreciate this, we know. Whether the “antis” like
it or not, British culture is grounded in Christianity and we should
stand up and be counted. There is strong evidence that many faithless,
and those of other faiths, share in some measure our Christmas
joy.”
There is
much more to say, I think, on this subject. Let’s
hear from you too, it must have been discussed in church circles,
services, and study groups. Even though Christmas is over now,
it’s not too late to have your say!
