I had my first Meccano set at age 4 in 1960, having previously been very interested in my father's 1928 set 3, which has since been passed on to me. My interest was rekindled about 10 years ago when my wife spotted an advert in the local post office for some red and green meccano for sale. I have since been buying odd "lots" of red and green Meccano to build up to the equivalent of set 10. My main Meccano interests are in designing new models and adapting old ones: a number of my recent models have been side shows at school fetes. My other interests include being church warden at St Bartholomew's Church, Bath and my work as a GP. I also dabble in DIY, geology, microscopy, photography, genealogy, and 'OO guage' model railways.
Philip was a keen Meccano builder as a boy and returned to the fold in the early 90’s after a gap of 25 years or more. He has since built up a good Meccano stock by reconditioning near-scrap quality parts and is now able to build large models featuring large numbers of common parts, the Trebuchet shown in the January 2001 meeting being a good example. He has produced a number of Model Plans which are sold by Geoff Wright, nearly all of which were scratch built and experimental in nature. At the outset of each model, he wasn’t sure he could make it work, which is the type of challenge he enjoys. Philip also plays Golf, enjoys Travel and likes to muck about with computers, which is just as well as he is a self-employed Computer Consultant. ![]() |
