Route Directions

With back to Propeller Statue, next to the Hotel Mount Batten, go towards road, down a few steps and across road. Turn left for 200m then turn right under car park barrier and across car park onto South West Coast Path. Keep wire fence and sea on right, when you rejoin pavement turn right and follow South West Coast Path signs to Jennycliff, keeping wire fence and sea still on right. Follow path until it comes out onto a large grass area with a few seats in front of you. Behind seats is a large marker stone for South West Coastal Path. From stone continue in same direction onto small path between bushes and bear around to left, now with wire fence on left, towards Café, keeping on grass, do not go out onto road. Keep to right of road, pass a few seats, through gap in hedge and follow path to gap in next hedge.

Question 1. On left is South West Coast Path sign. How many miles to Poole?

Through gap and kissing gate to go down then up steps, follow path to go through kissing gate to path junction, turn right follow path to cross a very small stream. Continue on cliff top path, pass defence bunkers on left, down steps, above a small harbour, going on to cross small ravine by wooden footbridge. Stay on path behind cottages, go down steps to road. Turn left, pass some houses on left then just past  Café, where road forks, follow path leading down steps to beach. Across edge of beach, then up tarmac path keeping straight on. Keep on this road with chalets on left for 500m. Road turns down right and becomes grass. At end of wall on left go through gap and continue on Coast Path which twists and turns for some way. Cross small wooden planking bridge [signpost Heybrook Bay] then 20m after next planking on path turn left with fence corner up on left, opposite marker post with yellow arrows. Follow fence uphill, keeping it on left.  At top turn right, follow path to steps after 180m continue up two more flights of steps following path onto road. Turn right uphill to road junction.

Question 2. What is name of the road on right, by telephone box?

Continue straight on at junction on road for 1500m, passing Longlands Drive, Westlake Rise, Silver Jubilee Hall and The Mussel Inn. Continue to signpost at Paiges Corner. Follow sign for Staddiscombe 1mile. After 300m, on left in lay-by, go through gap in hedge with gate on left, signposted Bovisand Bay 1½miles. Straight across field for 150m to small 4ft high marker post, near a hedge corner that juts out. Continue straight on across field to kissing gate in hedge just to right of trees. Through gate and bear slightly left but stay to right hand side of metal posts running across field to go through kissing gate in left hand corner, then down steps to lane. Turn right following lane to junction, then go straight on, 25m at sharp corner turn left to signpost by telegraph pole.

Question 3. What is the stone animal on top of gate at No 1?










Up steps next to telegraph pole, through kissing gate and along path, signpost Radford Lake 1mile. With hedge on right go to corner and over stile. Straight across, follow wide track with hedge on left, wire fence on right. Through kissing gate, wire fence now on left. Through another kissing gate, now with hedge on left and field on right. Continue on track,
don’t turn right on Erme-Plym Trail into woods, but follow track through gate, wall on left, to go through small gate in corner. Follow path down through woods with hedge on left, keep going down until 4ft high marker post then turn left through gap and follow path downhill, ignoring all side paths, down steps.  At bottom turn left and follow track by road. Straight on along path with houses on left, Arscott Lane. Bear right into Belle Vue Road, straight across main road, Hooe Road. Turn left and follow road downhill, ignore all side turnings. Past Victoria Inn and Harris Court Flats. Just past flats at Lake Road bear right across green area to iron railings and lake.

Question 4. Along path by railings and seat are 5 black lamp-posts, what is number of the 4th post?

Follow railings into Barton Road, turn right and continue alongside lake, past a disused lime kiln and quarry entrance on left. 100m after remains of bridge on right, turn left, and follow lane as far as it goes. Turn left into Turnchapel village past Boringdon Arms on left, bear left uphill into St Johns Road. Road bends around to left before coming out to main road. On wall on left is a round plaque.

Question 5. Who is the famous name on it?

Opposite plaque is footpath post, South West Coastal Path, to Clovelly Bay. Follow this path, down steps, along path with apartments on left and marina on right. At end of path on left is small car park. Bear right here, go up to main road and turn right. Follow main road back to Propeller Statue and Finish.
