As this is a circular walk it can be started at any convenient point
but the route directions given start at the Black Horse PH in Tilshead.
BLACK HORSE PH TILSHEAD (184/031479) - GORE CROSS (184/009509)
The route runs north across open fields and parallel to the A360
From Garage straight on (SP Chitterne) on road to top of hill. 150m after left bend turn right at tank crossing (yellow top posts) and bear right across open field to top of slope then down to Range Signs after 300m. Straight on, keeping close to signs on left, for 2000m to gate (184/013494). Straight on across field and after 200m keep small bank on left to Signpost. Turn right on bridleway. Straight on at tarmac track and bear left onto main road, to junction after 100m.

GORE CROSS - COULSTON HILL (184/950529)
An easy walking section following a narrow lane to top of an escarpment affording fine views northwards
Turn left, 50m turn right (SP Highland Farm) on road. Continue straight on lane for 4000m. As lane turns left to Army Camp bea rright on wide gravel track. Straight on for 2200m to join tarmac lane, straight on past trig point. As lane turns sharp right continue straight on (SP By Way) on gravel lane.

COULSTON HILL - WESTBURY HILL (184/893509)
An undulating section over mixed terrain before joining a tarmac lane and well defined tracks. A short diversion to the White Horse on Westbury Hill gives excellent views over Wiltshire and Somerset to the Mendip Hills in the west.
After 200m straight on (SP By Way) continuing downhill for another 200m then turn left, off main track. 30m cross stile on right (184/942529) and follow edge of field keeping fence on right, cross stile in far corner and down steps. Turn right on lane then after 20m turn left on track. By barn turn left on grass footpath and straight on to road, by barrier. Turn right on tarmac then after 50m turn left following lane uphill past barn at top and straight on to gravel track. Straight on by farm buildings to green range hut. Turn right to X-tracks by quarry entrance.

WESTBURY HILL - ARN HILL (183/878458)
From the chalk quarry an easy walk along the edge of the Plain is followed by a hilly and open route bordering the Range before dropping down to the outskirts of Warminster.
Turn left, keeping quarry on left and follow main track for 2800m. As track becomes tarmac turn left over stile, by gate (183/878488). Downhill by edge of field keeping fence on right then uphill and cross stile. Turn left on lane, after 200m pass farm buildings on right and conttinue straight on keeping fence on left. Continue uphill alongside edge of field keeping fence and Danger signs on left. Straight on at stile, uphill to clump of trees, keeping Range signs on left. At top bear right alongside fence to clump of trees. Past barn and straight on with fence on left, thrugh gate into golf course. Follow path keeping close to fence on left, past club house, then bear left on footpath downhill through trees to road.

ARN HILL - WEST HILL FARM (184/935442)
The hilliest part of the route climbing over Battlesbury, Middle and Sratchbury Hills and allowing views southwards over the Wylye Valley and also northward into the closed Imber Range.
At road, by entrance to golf course, turn left for 400m then turn right on road (Elm Hill) for 700m to T-junction. Turn left past School of Infantry. Straight on at X roads continuing uphill for 400m then bear right uphill on footpath. Up bank and X stile, bear right following edge of field with fence on right. At Signpost and stile bear left on footpath for 30m to join main track continuing uphill for 50m. At fence turn right on innermost ridge, with fence on left. 200m X stile continuing around hill. X stile and turn right on track with fence on right. X stile and straight on downhill following footpath to cross tank track. Through gateway, by Signpost, and bear right uphill to continue uphill with fence on right. Bear right at end of small wood downhill on footpath across field to lane. Straight on for 20m then turn right over stile. At next stile, by wooden SP, (184/911445) bear left uphill keeping to left of hill and Tumuli stars, following around to right keeping fence on left. At Signpost and stile staright on for 100m then turn left at stile by Tumuli star. Bear right across field to fence and stile. Do not cross stile but turn left keeping fence on right. Straight on at Signpost (gate). 10m after corner, by stile, turn left across field and straight on at next stile heading to trees. Striaght on track continuing downhill to bottom corner of field. Straight on footpath, by stile, into trees and down to road. Turn left, around sharp bend, and after 1000m, opposite farm, turn right on tarmac lane past cottages.

WEST HILL FARM - CHITTERNE (184/992439)
An open section crossing farmland then joining a track alongside the edge of the Range before dropping down into Chitterne sheltering in a small valley. Unfortunately there are no shops on route, just a Public House.
Past cottages and staright on at end of tarmac with trees on left to cross tank track. Bear left uphill across field to corner of wood. Turn right keeping wood on left. At far end, by wooden Signpost, bear left across open field keeping to top of slope. As slope finishes staright on to top corner of field. Turn right alongside edge of Range keeping fence on right. After 1500m straight on across track by water tank. (184/959445). Keep fence on right for 1000m, bear right to corner of field and through gateway by end of line of trees. Straight on track through clump of trees and X track to path between fences and down to road. Turn left into Chitterne and staright on for 500m.

CHITTERNE – TILSHEAD
The Path climbs over Copehill Down passing the mock German training village. This is one of the more isolated parts of the Plain and extreme care must be exercised in following the route as military training takes place either side of the Path. CARE - DO NOT TOUCH SUSPICIOUS OBJECTS !!
Turn left ( SP Tilshead), 40m turn right on tarmac lane. 100m after left bend turn right on path continuing uphill. Past barn, straight on across tarmac lane to track. At top of hill pass under electricity lines and between fenced plantations. Straight on track heading towards training village 2500m ahead. As ground dips continue straight on keeping shrub line and fenced plantation on right. Keep village approx 300m to left and follow line of shrubs and trees. Straight on across main track (leading to village entrance) and approx half way along village bear left towards edge of fenced plantation 300m away, then bear left for 250m to Signpost Slightly bear left away from track for 300m to Signpost (at left hand edge of shrub line). Straight on for 300m to fenced plantation on left, passing trig point 100m to right. Keep wood about 100m away on right then bear right for 200m to Signpost and join track past National Trust White Barrow. After 300m turn left on footpath across fields. Bear left by small outbuildings with fence on left to road by Black Horse PH.
