What is Amnesty International?

Amnesty International is a worldwide voluntary movement of people who campaign for human rights. We are independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion.

Our vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards

Our mission

Like many other organisations, we are guided by a mission, which explains what we do. It helps us define our work and focus our energies to make us more effective.

Our mission explains the two main ways in which we campaign:

  • Promoting general awareness of human rights; and
  • Opposing specific abuses of human rights.

What is the role of the Cardiff group of Amnesty International?

As an affiliated group of the UK Section of Amnesty (AIUK), we support the worldwide organisation through:

  • Monthly meetings with speakers, campaign updates, workshops and other activities - for details of forthcoming meetings see our diary page;
  • Campaigning, letter writing, and raising the profile of human rights and the work of Amnesty - for details see the group's campaigns page.
  • Fundraising - recent events have included our annual sponsored walk, street collections, concerts, stalls and sales of cards and t-shirts.

If you are interested in helping with any of these please e-mail us.

When and where does the group meet?

The group meets on the second Monday of the month at 7.30pm at the Quaker Meeting House on Charles Street.  This is in Cardiff City Centre, just off Queen Street (the side street between Marks & Spencer and Burger King).  We are a mixture of ages and backgrounds and new members are always welcome.

A diary of our forthcoming meetings can be found on diary page.
