Burma
Petition Event
On
Saturday 24th March volunteers from the Cardiff Amnesty Group, university
and local schools groups joined forces to call for the release of Burma's
political prisoners. We did this by asking the public to "Give Us
a Hand" - literally by drawing around their hand and signing our
petition wall.
Hundreds of people signed and
our wall and many were photographed showing their support. We now hope
to deliver the petition to the Burmese embassy in London.
Photos of the day are on our
Facebook
page or available as a slideshow
2011 Greetings
Card Campaign

On
28 November a number of our group met in Chapter to send cards to prisoners
and human rights defenders as part of Amnesty's annual Greetings Card
Campaign. Despite the small number we managed to send nearly 50 cards.
Schools
Speakers
The
Amnesty Cardiff Group currently has two schools speakers who go into schools
and colleges to talk about Amnesty and human rights..
Since attending the training
day in June we have been to four schools, colleges and universities to
cover areas such as:

- A talk on Stoning in Iran
to the Social Justice group in St David's College;
- An introduction to Amnesty
International for the first year law students in the University of Glamorgan;
- A morning of talks and lessons
in Cwmcarn High School, including a lesson for 6th Law, RE and Welsh
Bac pupils on the UN Declaration of Human Rights
If you would like more details
please e-mail us or see www.amnesty.org.uk/speakers.
Zarganar
In
our October meeting we showed the film "This Prison Where I Live",
about Burmese comedian Zarganar who was serving a 35 year prison sentence
for criticising the Burmese government. Two days later we heard that he
was released (under strict conditions) along with around 120 other political
prisoners, however hundreds more remain in prison.
In March we will be holding
a street event in Cardiff, asking people to support the release of the
remaining prisoners of conscience in Burma.
Troy Davis
On
21 September 2011 Troy Davis was executed by the US State of Georgia.
The execution went ahead despite a high-profile “Too Much Doubt”
campaign, with over one million people worldwide signing a petition to
the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles calling for them to intervene
to prevent the execution. Amnesty International and other campaigners
had held vigils around the world as the execution approached, including
outside the US embassy in London.
Elizabeth Jenkins of the Amnesty
Cardiff Group wrote very recently to Troy’s family, through the
Amnesty website, expressing sympathy for them at this time; Elizabeth
received eight letters from Troy over years of campaigning.
Shortly before his execution
Troy told AI USA:
“The struggle for
justice just doesn’t end with me.This struggle is for all the
Troy Davises who came before me and all the ones who will come after
me. I’m in good spirits and I’m prayerful and at peace.”
