In a county like Suffolk there are many towns of varying size, each
with a unique history and background waiting to be explored by both
residents and visitors alike. But the prospect of wandering around
the streets and pathways with only a street plan as a guide can be
somewhat bewildering. That's where country walks writer Michael Anderton's new book comes to the rescue. Suffolk Town Trails was published in November (ISBN 0-9543425-0-X £5.95) by Suffolk Country Walks and provides an easy to follow guide around the county's 20 ancient towns. "During six years of writing weekly walks for the Ipswich Evening Star I built up quite a collection of walks, some of which were based on the county's towns" says Michael. This book is his collection of town trails based on the historic and picturesque market towns and administration centres of Suffolk. In the book are walks around Aldeburgh, Beccles, Bungay, Bury St. Edmunds, Eye, Felixstowe, Framlingham, Hadleigh, Halesworth, Haverhill, Ipswich, Leiston, Lowestoft, Needham Market, Newmarket, Saxmundham, Southwold, Stowmarket, Sudbury and Woodbridge. Find out how Beccles became a thriving holiday spot and learn about the twin towers of Bungay Castle. Stroll through Hadleigh town and along the shady banks of the River Brett to a medieval bridge. Get a taste of the many interesting historic buildings of the county town of Ipswich and its famous wet dock, now being developed for recreational use. Check out the old market town of Woodbridge and the Shire Hall, now housing the Shire Horse Museum. Suffolk Town Trails contains walks around the county's 20 old towns, each section has a fully descriptive and numbered text, clearly annotated two colour map and colour photographs. Printed in a pocket size A5 format, the Wiro binding allows the book to be opened back to back thus enabling the reader to follow the text and map easily on the move. Although now retired, Michael Anderton was formerly Suffolk County Council's Countryside Access Project Officer. He is still a Member of the Institute of Public Rights of Way Officers and continues to regularly write walk articles for publication. He has previously produced five books of country walks and this is his first venture into self-publication of his work. | |
