"ONE TO JUMP!!" 1999

HANDICAP CHASERS
Aghawadda Gold
bay gelding Peacock {FR} - Portane Miss
7
Tom P Tate
Decent novice chaser, didn’t show his form at the Cheltenham Festival, wont be well handicapped this term, but has the scope to bridge the gap

Ambrosia
brown mare Strong Gale - Scotsman Ice
6
Geoff A Hubbard
Record over fences so far is 50%. A nasty fall followed a smooth victory. If her confidence has been restored, she should regain the wining thread

Annie Buckers
brown mare Yashgan - Glenkins
8
Kim C Bailey
Was off the track for two years since showing good form in Irish Points when winning well at Towcester. Fell at Ayr when looking likely to win last time out, and may still be open to further improvement

Arlequin de Sou {FR}
bay gelding Sir Brink - Colombine
5
Phillip J Hobbs
Winner over fences in France, but was disappointing over hurdles here, but may have acclimatised now. He may well be on an attractive mark as a result

Bouchasson {FR}
bay gelding Big John - Kizil-Ayak
6
Phillip J Hobbs
After looking very ordinary in a couple of novice chases, blossomed into a useful performer in winning races at Ayr and Punchestown. There is plenty of scope for further improvement, and looks like one to note for one of the season's premier handicaps

Breath of Scandal
brown gelding Strong Gale - Her Name was Lola
8
Chris Grant
Was well thought of by Oliver Sherwood. missed two seasons and moved to current trainer. Looked good winning twice at Hexham, and will be hard to beat in handicap chases in the North.

Brother of Iris
bay gelding Decent Fellow - Granita Cafe {FR}
6
Mary Reveley
Another Northern chaser who didn’t show his true form at the Cheltenham Festival, however smooth performances prior to that indicated that there he is capable of significant improvement this term. One to look out for in the better handicaps

Champleve {FR}
grey gelding Kendor {FR} - Nilmeen {FR}
6
Martin C Pipe
Missed last season because of injury, however is a decent horse who still has time on his side and could win a decent handicap this term.

Cherokee Boy
grey gelding Mirror Boy - Cherry Side
7
Brian M J Ryall
Very useful pointer two season ago, took most of last season to translate that under rules. Isn’t another ‘Teeton Mill’, but can win his fair share ofd races around the gaffs.

Course Doctor
chestnut gelding Roselier {FR} - Faultless Girl
7
George M Moore
Unlucky to have got beaten last year, fell twice with races at his mercy. could shape into a useful Northern handicapper if the jumping holds together.

Cyfor Malta {FR}
bay gelding Cyborg {FR} - Force Nine {FR}
6
Martin C Pipe
At present not sure to run this term, but his form of last season, arguably make him one of the best chasers ion the country, and has to be one to watch out for as a result.

Earthmover
chestnut gelding Mister Lord {USA} - Clare's Crystal
8
Paul F Nicholls
Didn’t fulfil the promise he showed at the previous season’s Foxhunters Chase, in many way his season may be best forgotten, nothing went right, his preparation for Cheltenham was rushed. Forgive him, and he can regard by winning a decent handicap, either over fences, or even over extreme distances over hurdles

Edelweis du Moulin {FR}
bay gelding Lute Antique {FR} - Tulipe du Moulin {FR}
7
Venetia M Williams
My Nemesis. i’m convinced this horse is to class to win a top class race, but whilst he’s confirmed he possess class, he continues flatters to deceive in Grade 1 events. Last season we may have glimpsed where his future lays, as he pulverised a useful at Aintree. May not run that often but looks booked for a win in a decent prize this winter

Edmond {FR}
bay gelding Video Rock {FR} - Gallia III {FR}
7
Henry D J Daly
Disappointing novice chaser last term, may still need time, and will be well handicapped as a result. If he shows some aptitude for the game, then he’d be worth following until beaten.

Eltigri {FR}
brown gelding Mistrigri - Obepine II {FR}
7
Terry Casey
Eltigri’s astute trainer doesn’t rush his horses, and this one looks poised to move up a gear after winning a couple of small races around the gaffs. Could win a decent B or C handicap this term.

Eluois {FR}
brown gelding Air du Nord {USA} - Kerisandre {FR}
7
Martin C Pipe
It was interesting that Martin Pipe continues to persevere with this one, as he was very useful three years ago. Unfortunately he picks up an injury, and did look ordinary . However he was running well in the Kim Muir when falling 8 out , and might pick up a few if his sights are lowered initially

Excuse Me Sir
brown gelding Glacial Storm {USA} - Knockartic
6
Eugene M O'Sullivan in Ireland
Young chaser still on the upgrade in Ireland. winner of a couple of novice races last term , should win this term, despite not being a world beater

Fenix de L'Isle {FR}
chestnut gelding Video Rock {FR} - Ivresse de L'Isle
6
Ian P Williams
Winners of a hurdles & two chases in France, will almost certainly need to obtain a handicap mark before consideration, but there are several opportunities for horses like him

First Gold {FR}
bay gelding Shafoun {FR} - Nuit d'Or {FR}
6
Francois Doumen in France
One of the best chasers in France, may well venture to these shores this term.... back him if he does !!!

Foly Pleasant {FR}
chestnut gelding Vaguely Pleasant - Jeffologie {FR}
5
Henrietta C Knight
Multi winning chaser in France, can win in this sphere once he has obtained a handicap mark, especially as time is still on his side

Fulip {FR}
bay gelding Cap Martin {FR} - Tulip d'Avril {FR}
6
Francois Doumen in France
People forget how well Fulip ran in the 1998 Sun Alliance Chase. Whilst Florida Pearl and Escartefigue had the first of their numerous battles, Fulip ran a corker behind, finishing over 15 lengths behind, after knocking himself at one of the latter obstacles . He has run creditably in the top French races since, and is an intended runner in these shores this season

Gill'mar {FR}
bay gelding Le Naine Jaune {FR} - Lolomar {FR}
5
Henry D J Daly
One of several horses Henry Daly has inherited from Captain Tim Forster. Kept a low profile, and won a couple of races round the gaffs. That is his level and can continue the good work this season.

High Gale
brown gelding Strong Gale - High Board
7
Paul F Nicholls
Well bred individual, closely related to Morley Street. Took a while to get the hang of fences, but looked good, when winning a couple of races at the end of last season. Sustained an injury last time out, and as long as it hasn’t left any ill effects, he can continue with the winning thread this season.

Kadou Nonaintais {FR}
bay gelding Cadoudal {FR} - Belle Nonantaise {FR}
6
Oliver M C Sherwood
Lovely individual who was unlucky to come up against Majadou first time out. Carried all before him then before falling at the Cheltenham Festival. Sustained an injury and may only have a light campaign, but still is worth bearing in mind.

Kings Banker
bay gelding King's Ride - Wren's Princess
8
Nicky J Henderson
Kings Banker won a couple of races last term, and finished the season well behind Looks Likes Trouble in the Sun Alliance Chase. He has long distance chaser stamped all over him, and should be noted for that type of event.
Lislaughtin Abbey
chestnut gelding Nicholas Bill - Kates Fling {USA}
7
Owen Brennan
Interesting that Owen Brennan purchased this individual, and rewarded him with a couple of victories around the gaffs. Honest enough and shown continue in that vain this season

Lord of the River
brown gelding Lord Americo - Well Over
7
Oliver M C Sherwood
One of the better novices from last term, didn’t show his true potential in the Sun Alliance Chase behind Looks Like Trouble. May be difficult to place but has a touch and can win this term.

Majadou {FR}
bay gelding Cadoudal {FR} - Majathen {FR}
5
Martin C Pipe
Majadou was one of the easiest winners at last season’s Cheltenham Festival which capped a great first season. Badly handicapped and may be hard to place, but has time on his side, and probably wont run much this term. One to watch for when he does.

Malborough
brown gelding Strong Gale - Wrekenogan
7
Nicky J Henderson
Malborough might have been unbeaten but for his jumping last term. You’d want to see him run first time out, but left the strong impression that there was a lot more to come from him.

Montroe
grey gelding Roselier {FR} - Cathedral Street
7
Richard Rowe
Very disappointing last term, but stable was under a cloud and may be worth remembering this as Montroe was a useful novice hurdler two seasons ago, and may well be in this season.

Occold
bay gelding Over the River {FR} - My Puttens
8
Geoff A Hubbard
Missed last season due to injury and may well make up for lost time here. He was a very good novice two seasons, and missing a year may transpire to have been a blessing in disguise.

Rince Ri
chestnut gelding -
6
Ted M Walsh in Ireland
Softly softly approach adopted so far, but Ted Walsh may well reap the reward this term. He look useful when winning at the Punchestown Festival, and can be expected to continue up the ladder this term. He is probably more likely to be looking for conditions races but would be well handicapped should he appear in one.

Spendid
bay gelding Tidaro {USA} - Spendapromise
7
David Nicholson
One of many horses who failed to show their true form at Cheltenham, he is better judged on his runs previously at Warwick, where he gave Unsinkable Boxer the fright of his life, giving weight. Reasonably handicapped at the start of the season, may well improve out of all recognition, especially over trips in excess of three miles.

Stormyfairweather
bay gelding Strong Gale - Game Sunset
7
Nicky J Henderson
Ground and Yogi Breisner, transformed this poor jumper. He looked very useful at Cheltenham when winning the Cathcart, and I expect him to make up into a very useful handicapper this season.

The Moor
brown gelding Strong Gale - Maid of Moyode
8
Mark Tompkin
Disappointed last term, but worth persevering with as Mark Tompkins chaser didn’t show his true form. May start this season on a favourable mark and whilst he isn’t a ‘Cheltenham horse’ should win his races round the park courses.

Tipstaff {FR}
bay gelding Kendor {FR} - Spanish Sparrow
7
Martin C Pipe
It was amazing how poorly this horse has been in these country, His jumping has been appalling, and you’d think he struggle in selling company. I cannot leave out a horse with top grade form in France, as at some stage it must come right..... mustn’t it ?!!!!

Tiraldo {FR}
bay gelding Royal Charter {FR} - Tamilda {FR}
6
Henry D J Daly
Tiraldo might have been unbeaten but for his jumping last term, and is at a cross-roads, and could go either way. You’d want to see him run first time out, but like of these, left the strong impression that there was a lot more to come from him

POINT TO POINT & HUNTER CHASERS

Castle Mane
chestnut gelding Carlingford Castle -
7
Caroline Bailey
Is probably as good a banker as Istabraq appears in the Champion Hurdle, wont be beaten in Hunter Chase company,... unless Sheltering improves and comes to take him on, though that one may well be going under rules. Cant consider Castle Mane for the Gold Cup until he runs against a useful yardstick, but I wouldn’t dismiss his chance until he does

Charlie Strong
bay gelding Strong Gale - The Village Vixen
6
Richard Barber
I think Charlie Strong is a very good horse, but is a slow maturing type who will need time. Possibly may go to Paul Nichol’s yard. but will win hunter chases should he go that route.

Irisheyesaresmilin
brown gelding John French -
5
Caroline Bailey
Winner of his only point, and is highly thought of by the stable. I fully expect him to be make the transition to hunter chases, and potentially is a very useful horse.

Moving Earth
bay gelding Brush Aside {USA} - Park Breeze
6
Richard Barber
Hasn’t shown the sort of form under rules he has shown in points, and unfortunately got tagged as the next ‘wonder pointer’ tag as well, never mind time is on his side and he’ll win his fair share of hunter chases this term.

Satshoon
bay gelding Satco {FR} - Tudor Lady
6
Richard Barber
Satshoon is a slow maturing type from the Barber stable destined for Paul Nichols yard. Winner of a couple of points last term, he may not appear under rules, and may concentrate on points, but will win a hunter chase should he be entered up

Sheltering
bay gelding Strong Gale -
7
Edward J O'Grady in Ireland
Only Castle Mane lowered his colours and will be hard to beat, either in novice chases or hunter chases in Ireland, whichever path he chooses

The Hobbit
chestnut gelding Mister Lord {USA} - Sustenation
6
Richard Barber
Another slow maturing type from the Barber stable destined for Paul Nichols yard. May not appear under rules, and may concentrate on points, but will win a hunter chases should he go that path.

NOVICE CHASERS

Ad Hoc
brown gelding Strong Gale - Knockartic
5
Lenny Lungo
A winner and placed in Point to Points last season, will probably be put straight over the larger obstacles, should find races in the North

Anubus Quericus {FR}
bay gelding Kadrou {FR} - Polish Maid
6
Henry D J Daly
Had form in the French Provinces, made one appearance in a point to point when he went off like a scalded cat, but did well to still be clear when falling 2 out. A shorter trip is preferable

Arlan {FR}
bay gelding Northern Fashion - Ribbon in her Hair
4
Paul F Nicholls
Half brother to Amitge, winner of a £50,000 chase at Auteuil. It will very interesting to see how this four year old is placed by Paul Nicholls, but should win races nonetheless

Ballysicyos {FR}
bay gelding Nikos - Bally Duke
4
Martin C Pipe
Showed form in novice company last season and ran really well at the Cheltenham Festival. He would be very interesting if put over fences this season.

Below the Salt
brown gelding Over the River {FR} - Comeallye
6
Steve A Brookshaw
Amateur ridden so far in his career. Looked ordinary for most of last season, but showed some form at the end of the season. Will benefit from stronger riding , now he is with Steve Brookshaw and might be worth noting in handicap company

Billy Nomaite
chestnut gelding Komaite {USA} - Lucky Monashka
5
Sue J Smith
Looked very ordinary over hurdles last term, but has the scope to make a chaser, and it may pay to ignore last term with this in mind. One to look out for around the smaller tracks

Black Bullet {NZ}
brown gelding Silver Pistol {AUS} - Monte d'Oro {NZ}
6
Andy P Streeter
Ran well a couple of time in decent novice hurdles, but he was on the weak side, and I consider anything he did last term was a bonus. He has the scope to jump a fence, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he wins initially over hurdles

Bloomfield Storm
bay gelding Glacial Storm {USA} - Mylie's Response
6
Kim C Bailey
Winner of two points in Ireland, will be placed to good advantage by his trainer. Will probably need a trip

Bold Buccaneer
bay gelding Trigon - Camden's Gift
5
Paul F Nicholls
Winner of a point to point in Ireland by a distance. Paul Nicholls may adopt a bold policy and put him straight over fences,... we should reap the benefit

Boro Sovereign
bay gelding Kings Ride - Borro Penny
6
Nicky J Henderson
Ran well after winning a bumper at Huntingdon, finished runner up to Rash Remark on his last start. Will go straight over fences and must do well if take to them

Briano {FR}
brown gelding Tropular - Heralclia {FR}
4
Chris Parker
A big horse who probably disapointed connections last term, who would have expected this ex French-bred to do better than one win. He may well leave that form well behind this term if put over fences

Buckside
brown gelding Buckskin {FR} - Fashions Side
7
Nicky J Henderson
A lovely scopey horse who won a couple of races last term. Another who was given a quiet season and should as a result should repay the kindness over fences this term

Caldamus
grey gelding Scallywag - Portadamus
7
Merrita A Jones
Backward type who will improve throughout the season. Won a small novice hurdle at Sedgefield and will improve on that if taking to fences

Capitaine Leau {FR}
bay gelding Ganges {FR} - Disco Dancer
4
Nicky J Henderson
Winner of two hurdle races in Frances I believe he will be following the path laid by Makounji this season, and should win his races

Caracol
bay gelding Ore - Fit for a King
10
James Neville
Caracol has managed to squeeze into this list for the last five season, ever since I landed a nice touch on him in a Welsh point to point. He has very little mileage on the clock and whilst a touch mature can still win races round the smaller tracks

Carbury Cross
bay gelding Mandalus - Brickley Gazette
5
Jonjo O'Neill
A lovely looking individual may not run over fences until the new year, but is crying out for them. Does posses a lot of speed and might win staying handicap hurdles in the interim

Carlovent {FR}
bay gelding Cadoudal {FR} - Carlaya {FR}
4
Martin C Pipe
A multi winner in France, he has already starting shown his colour in this country. He was most impressive over Wolverhampton’s small fences/hurdles. After disappointing he defied top weight to win the Free Handicap Hurdle, giving the impression that a longer trip should suit. Should win over fences

Catfish Keith
bay gelding Be My Native {USA} - Diklers Run
5
Henrietta C Knight
Very striking individual, is reportedly going novice chasing, I personally would give him another season’s hurdling, however the trainer know what she’s doing and if she thinks he mature enough then that’s good enough for me

Cenkos {FR}
chestnut gelding Nikos - Vincensza
5
Oliver M C Sherwood
Another multi winner in France, he has only had one run in this country over hurdles, when slightly disappointing behind Zafarabad, not rushed and given time to acclimatise. He may be a useful chaser this term

Chasing Bailey's
bay gelding Neltino - Rosie Oh
5
Chris Grant
Another striking individual, very immature last term, and is still a baby. Will be worth noting during the second half of the season

Chevalier Bayard
brown gelding Strong Gale - Luminous Run
6
James R Adams
In retrospect. Chevalier Bayard was still on the weak side last term. Like most horses purchased by James Adams, he is a chasing type, big scopey, the sort that need time. May need another season on his back before blossoming, but blossom he will

Chicago City
brown gelding Strong Gale - Orchardstown
6
Josh T Gifford
One of the most attractive horses in training and is a typical Josh Gifford purchase. Has been given time to mature and will start repaying connection this term when put over the larger obstacles

Conchobor
brown gelding Supreme Leader - Nights Crack
7
Kim C Bailey
Has managed a couple of winner for the last two season, and I’d expect the same from him this term, this time over fences

Coolaw
bay gelding Miner's lamp - Mijette
6
Ferdy Murphy
Another horse being given the softly softly approach by his trainer, and is developing into a nice individual A winner over hurdles last term and can win chases around the Northern circuit.

Damus {GER}
bay gelding Surumu {GER } - Dawn Side {CAN}
5
Ian P Williams
Damus had useful form in Germany but didn’t show it last term, in fact he gave the impression that 2 miles was too far. apparently he has strengthened up over the close season, so all may not yet be lost

Dat My Horse
bay gelding All Haste - Toposki
5
Simon E H Sherwood
A winner of an Irish point to point, and should be up to winning over fences, but might not over them until the new year.

Decoupagé
bay gelding Busting - Collage
6
Charles R Egerton
Surprising that he is going chasing since the Champion Hurdle scene is so barren, however he is, and is possible a banker to win over fences this term.

Dick McCarthy
bay gelding Lancastrian - Waltzing Moon
7
Richard Rowe
A typical backward, shown only average form type that I note for when they go fencing. He may leave his old form behind when he’s tried over the larger obstacles

Do Ye Know Wha
bay gelding Ajraas {USA} - Norton Princess
7
Roger Curtis
Looked a chaser in the making last season, but hasn’t been convincing so far this term ,however one to persevere with and might reward following by the end of the season, if getting stronger handling

Donallach Mor
bay gelding Phardante {FR} - Panalee
7
Venetia M Williams
Useful novice hunter chaser last term, unbeaten so far, looks a long distance stayer in the making, but good enough to win in novice company, possibly defying penalties

Enipeus {GER}
chestnut gelding Acatenango {GER} - Eidothea {GER}
4
Martin C Pipe
Dour ex-German individual who won a couple last term, interestingly is going chasing and can make his make around the smaller tracks

Fadalko {FR}
bay gelding Cadoudal {FR} - Kalliste {FR}
6
Paul F Nicholls
Took a long time to show his french form last term, but when he did looked a useful sort, culminating in a Scottish Champion Hurdle victory. Has always looked a chaser and is one to pencil in Cheltenham with already

Fadoudal du Cochet {FR}
bay gelding Cadoudal {FR} - Eau de vie {FR}
6
Arthur L T Moore in Ireland
A typical Arthur Moore purchase, who will be given a quiet and low introduction to this game. I expect him to develop into one of the better individuals in this list by the end of the season

False Tail
bay gelding Roselier {FR} - Its Good Ere
7
Paul F Nichols
Multi point to point winner two seasons ago, slowly learning the game, and could win under rules over fences

Fataliste {FR}
bay horse Nikos - Faracha {FR}
5
Martin C Pipe
Typical decent four year old who lost this way the following season. Posses a touch of class and is a useful recruit to chasing

Font Romeu {FR}
bay gelding Start Fast {FR} - Il d'Amour
6
Martin C Pipe
A very good horse two seasons ago, Martin Pipe is learning not to rush his decent French-breds and this one will reward him this

French Holly {USA}
bay gelding Sir Ivor {USA} - Sans Dot
8
Ferdy Murphy
Top class hurdler who will only have to jump round to win novice chases, and whilst he will initially do this, he is more likely to go for the Gold Cup, and may be worth chancing in a conditions chase before that

Fullopep
bay gelding Dunbeath {USA} - Suggia
5
Mary Reveley
Very useful novice in the North, who surprisingly is being aimed over fences. There a lot of handicap hurdles which he would have won this term. Not wishing to question Mrs Reveley, I hope this nice sort takes to them

Galapiat du Mesnil {FR}
bay gelding Sarpedan - Polka de Montrin
5
Paul F Nicholls
Ran well for N Henderson last term winning once, and will be a better proposition over the larger obstacles this term

Garolsa {FR}
bay gelding Rivelago {FR} - Roi du Chatelier {FR}
5
Nicky J Henderson
Ex French horse, winner of his only race so far at Chepstow, can make up into a useful novice chaser

Generosa
bay mare Generosa - Hotel Street
6
John L Hassett in Ireland
Useful handicap hurdler last term, did me a couple of favours last season, particularly at the Cheltenham Festival. Reportedly going fences and looks good for mares only races

Geos {FR}
brown gelding Pistolet Bleu {FR} - Kaprika
4
Nicky J Henderson
One to note for the second half of the season. Recently arrived from France after being successful over hurdles and fences, looks one of the more interesting purchases to race in England this season

Gigolo Gerry
bay gelding Mandalus - Some Madam
6
Richard Rowe
Useful form in point to point winner in Ireland. Gigolo Gerry is a slow maturing type, and could win under rules over fences at some stage this season.

Goodtime George
bay gelding Strong Gale - Game Sunset
6
Mark A Pitman
Useful novice hurdler who improved with experience. Possibly overtried at the end of the season ,but can regain the winning thread if put over fences this term

Gue Au Loup {FR}
bay gelding Royal Charter - Arche d'Alliance
5
Henry D J Daly
Gue au Loup has some form in France, but was unable to run last term. I believe a softly softly approach is intended this term, but he hopefully should make up for lost time

Gun ‘n’ Roses {FR}
grey gelding Royal Charter {FR} - Offenbach II {FR}
5
Micky D Hammond
Showed some form two seasons ago but like several of the stable, disapointed last term, has the scope to atone, now he’s being put over fences

Hidebound
bay gelding Buckskin {FR} - Merry Run
7
Nicky J Henderson
Very useful novice hurdler who should made the grade over fences,...looks a cheltenham type

Hot to Trot
bay gelding Yashgan - La Tante
6
Kim C Bailey
Won a couple of novice hurdles last term, and looks to able to improve on that once put over the larger obstacles

Jeremy Fisher
bay gelding Ardross - Ovington Court
8
Henrietta C Knight
Former team cross-country/eventer has only had one run so far but was an impressive winner of a hunter chase. Is being aimed at the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and is the sort the win novice chases where the emphasis is placed on stamina

Jungli
bay gelding Be My Native {USA} - Simple Mind
6
Paul R Webber
Another useful novice hurdler in this section, who should made the grade over fences,...looks a cheltenham type, but more likely a handicap than the Arkle Chase.

Kedge Anchor Man
bay gelding Bustino - Jenny Mere
8
Nick A Gaselee
A typical Gaselee horse given loads of time to mature and is therefore a big backward baby. Likely to succeed in novice handicap, in the second half of the season.

Killerine {FR}
brown gelding Leading Counsel {USA} - Rose Petal {FR}
4
Ian P Williams
One of the best horses that came over from France last season, unfortunately he didn’t appear because of injury, should rectify that this season, and score over fences

Kings Boy
chestnut gelding Be My Native {USA} - Love-in-a-Mist
5
Nicky J Henderson
Impressive winner of a couple of races last term, particularly at Doncaster when the rest were stretched out for furlongs behind him. Should he take to the game can develop into another useful novice chaser for the yard.
Kingsmark
grey gelding Roselier {FR} - Gaye Le Moss
6
Oliver M C Sherwood
Kingsmark looked useful in winning novice hurdler throughout the season. Disappointed slightly at cheltenham, but is a horse of some potential and is worth noting over fences this season

Kit Smartie
bay gelding Be My Native {USA} - Smart Cookie
7
David M Foster
Very useful novice hurdler two seasons ago. Didn’t show much last term but has the scope to be a chaser and might show improved form as a result

Lady Cricket {FR}
chestnut mare Cricket Ball {USA} - Lady Meriza
5
Martin C Pipe
Very useful hurdler, who didn’t run to form in the Champion Hurdle. Is reportedly going chasing and is a live candidate for Cheltenham honours
Leaburn
bay gelding Tremblant - Conderlea
6
Phillip J Hobbs
One of Phillip Hobbs lesser likes, but did win a novice hurdler last term ,and would hopefully improve on that this term over fences

Linwood
grey mare Ardross - Silva Linda
8
Nicky G Richards
Ran once over fences last term at Kelso when she unluckily pipped close home. That is her level but novice handicaps and mares only races are there for her to take in the North.
Lord O' All Season
bay gelding Mister Lord - Autumn News
6
Nicky J Henderson
One of several pointers from Ireland in my list. Although he may start over hurdles, as he is already six, I would expect him to go over fences at some stage this term, and that would be where he is more likely to succeed

Malbaum {GER}
bay gelding -
5
David Bridgwater
Took a long time to acclimatise last term , and only succeeded when stepped up in trip, and down in grade. Does possess a lot of scope and can jump a fence. One of the poorer horses in my lists, but conversely is probably one of the most likely to succeed

Marcontess
bay mare Kings Ride - Lady Rag
8
Kim C Bailey
Winning pointer from Ireland a couple of seasons ago, interestingly kept in training by the trainer. Little mileage on the clock and will be worth noting when she appears
McHattie {NZ}
chestnut gelding Tom's Shu {USA} - Kittain
7
Steve A Brookshaw
So far hasn’t taken to chasing, and has put in some dreadful rounds of jumping. If this has been rectified, he will win races, and might be interesting if started in handicap company

Mr Jake
bay gelding Safawan - Miss Tealeaf
6
H E Haynes
One of the biggest horses in my list, if not in training. has ‘Chaser, Chaser, Chaser’ stamped all over him. He is a big baby, and needs time so is likely is to start from humble beginnings and then work himself up through the ranks

Mr Percy
chestnut gelding John French - Rathvilly Flyer
8
Josh T Gifford
Its a pity that Josh Gifford hadn’t tried this horse over fences before, as he looks the part. Looks an Arkle candidate, and has a good chance of succeeding, his age may hinder how far he progress in this sphere

Native Upmanship
chestnut gelding Be My Native {USA} - Hi Upham
6
Arthur L T Moore in Ireland
Very useful novice hurdler in Ireland last term, winning at Punchestown at the end of the season. looks like a chaser and might well be Ireland’s best staying novice chaser this season

Nomadic
grey gelding Kenmare {FR} - Legend of France
5
Noel Meade in Ireland
Very Surprised Nomadic is going chasing since the Champion Hurdle scene is so barren, however he is a banker to win over fences this term

Pegasus Bay
bay gelding Tina's Pet - Mossberry Fair

Don E Cantillon
Useful in Claiming /Selling company on the flat, has the scope for the job. Has the potential to be a useful handicapper over fences round the gaff tracks, and should lose his maiden tag before that this term.

Perching
bay gelding Strong Gale - Fiona's Blue
5
Josh T Gifford
Ran well in a couple of decent bumpers last term, Perching is an imposing individual who should make an impact if placed straight over hurdles

Perfect Venue
bay gelding Danehill {USA} - Welsh Fantasy
6
Nicky J Henderson
Winner over hurdles last term, could make his mark over fences this term

Pride of the Sword {NZ}
chestnut gelding Imperial Seal - Notram {NZ}
6
Michael A Jarvis
Came to the UK with useful form in New Zealand. Was travelling very well when falling four out on British debut, and should be able to be placed to win this season

Rash Remark
chestnut gelding Rashar {USA} - Granig Rarity
6
Martin C Pipe
Useful novice who has shown good form since coming from Ireland. Could make a similar impression this term if taking to fences

Reflex Courier
bay gelding Over the River {FR} - Thornpark Lady
7
John R Upson
Another in my list who, so far, hasn’t taken to chasing, put in some dreadful rounds of jumping last term. If this has been rectified, he will win races, and might be interesting if started in handicap company

Rio's King
bay gelding Kings Ride - Rio Dulce
7
John C Tuck
Useful if rather immature individual who showed good form at the beginning of the season, but tailed off when upped in grade. Would make a similar impression this term if taking to fences, but does still need more time

Russell Road
brown gelding Phardante {FR} - Burren Gale
7
David Nicholson
My sort of horse. A useful sort who has shown good form in bumper, and novice hurdles. May well improve for jumping fences and I expect him to make an impact this season if taking to them

Saxaphone
bay gelding Supreme Leader - Kitty Cullen
6
Jim T R Dreaper in Ireland
Useful novice hurdler, last term in Ireland. Has the scope to make a chaser, and the trainer wouldn’t try him over them unless he thought he was ready

Shahboor {USA}
bay gelding Zilzal {USA} - Iva Reputation {USA}
6
Pauline Robeson
Useful handicap hurdler, who has done me many a turn over the last three seasons. I suspect he will be the first Zilzal horse to win over fences if he takes to fences, and as he is a very good hurdler, I would expect him to

Sikander A Azam
bay gelding Arctic Lord - Shanlaragh
5
Chris Grant
Useful novice/handicap hurdler last term. Has always created a favourable impression for me, and could make a similar impression this term if taking to fences

Soldat {USA}
bay gelding Bering - Sans Prix {USA}
6
Paul F Nicholls
Missed last term through injury, after showing decent form in novice hurdles. Soldat looks the sort to make up into a useful sort this term

Soloman
brown gelding Mandalus - Solo Player
6
Josh T Gifford
Soloman so far, hasn’t taken to chasing, but I’d be prepared to forgive him since his stable were completely out of sorts last season.. He will win races, and is another who is well handicapped at the start of the season.

Splendid Melody
chestnut gelding Ile de Cheypre - Slave-Lady
5
Tom P Tate
Splendid Melody hasn’t shown his Irish point to point form so far on these shores. Put in some dreadful performances last term, and if he has acclimatised, he will win races

Teeatral
bay gelding Saddlers' Hall - La Cabrilla
5
Charles R Egerton
Useful handicap hurdler who has did me some good turns last season. If he takes to fences he is likely to make into a good recruit.

Tempestuous Lady
bay mare Sexton Blake - Lady Easton
8
Nicky J Henderson
Useful novice hurdler last term, particularly when kept to mares only races. Another who created a favourable impression, and can succeed over fences this season

The Honest Poacher
bay gelding Saronicus - Shanaway
9
Henry D J Daly
Missed three seasons after winning a point to points in Wales, he could be up to winning around the smaller tracks if his jumping holds up this term

To-day To-day
bay gelding Waajib - Balela
6
Lenny Lungo
Useful novice handicap hurdler in the North last term. I’m looking to him winning similar events this season over the larger obstacles

Tonoco
brown gelding Teenoso {USA} - Lady Shoco
6
Sue J Smith
Very useful novice hurdler last term. Has always given me the impression that his career would take off, once he was put over fences .....that time is now nigh

Toomaline
bay gelding Supreme Leader - Ferryforth Lady
5
Phillip J Hobbs
Placed in point to points in Ireland, he could be up to winning around the smaller tracks

Toto Toscato {FR}
bay gelding Lesotho {USA} - Tosca de Bellouet {FR}
5
David Nicholson
Toto Toscato came to the UK with useful form behind him, and whilst he was slightly disappointing did leave the impression that this would be his game

Wellington {NZ}
brown gelding Tights {USA} - Rawley {NZ}
5
Nick A Gaselee
Another typical Gaselee horse. Wellington is a big backward baby who is more likely to succeed in the second half of the season.

Windross
bay gelding Ardross - Dans Le Vent
7
David Nicholson
One of the nicest novices in this list. Although he was impressive at Haydock left the impression that he was still on the weak side. I expect further improvement this season and is going to be a useful novice this season.
Yorkshire Edition
brown gelding Strong Gale - Rent a Card
6
Paul F Nicholls
Wincanton specialist last term,.. so far unbeaten there. Has always given me the impression that his career would take off, once he was put over fences and is a likely improver this season.

Young Spartacus
bay gelding Teeneso {USA} - Celtic Slave
6
Henry D J Daly
Looked good in a couple of handicap hurdles at Warwick. I’m looking to him winning this season over the larger obstacles, at similar venues

You're A Goodun
chestnut gelding Derrylin - Jennie Pat
7
Martin C Pipe
Very wayward at the beginning of last season, amazingly blossomed into a serious handicap hurdler by the close. Likely to continue on the upgrade this season, and is an interesting prospect for novice chases

National Hunt Flat Horses {BUMPERS}
By Jove
bay gelding Jupiter Island - Joscilla
4
Henrietta C Knight
A half-brother to Oatis Regrets, not likely to run until after Christmas, and will only run in a couple of bumpers this season.

Vincent Van Gogh
bay gelding Executive Perk - Rare Picture
4
Mark A Pitman
Well bred individual, well thought of by connection, may be kept to this level this season
Conditions Races {Hurdlers}

Auetaler {GER}
grey horse Niniski - Astica
5
Martin C Pipe
A useful novice, placed extremely well by Martin Pipe to aid his Championship bid. Gave Barton his hardest race of the season, and if placed more strategically may make the grade in graded company

Gallant Moss {FR}
brown gelding Tip Moss {FR} - Tchela {FR}
5
Martin C Pipe
Decent import from France who took time to acclimatise, looked useful by the close of the season, and worth noting for either staying hurdles or novice chases.

Katarino {FR}
bay gelding Pistoleu Bleu - Katevana {FR}
4
Nicky J Henderson
Top class juvenile, trapped in that awkward second season, and will be very hard to place. There is talk of him going novice chasing. I hope he doesn’t.., the Champion hurdle stage is so vacant that his presence is a welcome additional

Le Coudray {FR}
brown gelding Phantom Breeze - Mos Lie {FR}
5
Aiden P O'Brien in Ireland
Decent hurdler who you would expect to make the grade over fences, but is probably going to either be kept in reserve should something go wrong with Istabraq, or will attempt to atone his defeat in the Stayers Hurdle at Cheltenham

Sallies Girl
bay mare Un Desperado {FR} - Katerina
6
Noel Meade in Ireland
Reportedly may be going novice chasing which is a mistake, since she wasn’t far behind the best at Cheltenham on unsuitable ground last season. She will win her chases, but I feel that a decent stayers hurdle race is hers for the taking Handicap Hurdlers

Allgrit {USA}
bay colt Shadeed {USA} - Arsaan {USA}
4
Jim A B Old
Looked very useful in winning a couple of races, before running well at Aintree. Entitled to improve further, and looks capable of building of last season's form, may win a decent Grade A or B handicap.

Ashley Park
bay horse Sadlers Wells {USA} - Maiden Concert
5
Mark A Pitman
Looked very good when trouncing Brown Lad at Sandown in his only start, and may be worth bearing in mind in a decent handicap, come the new year.

A S Jim
bay gelding Welsh Captain - Cawston's Arms
8
Owen O'Neill
Missed last term through injury, but was a useful park handicapper, who is still open to some improvement and can win in lesser company.

Blue Royal {FR}
bay gelding Dauphin du Bourg {FR} - Before the Flag
4
Nicky J Henderson
One of the better juvenile hurdlers from last term, looked good when winning at the Punchestown Festival. He may be difficult to place, but may pick up a decent race this season, and does have the luxury to switch to chasing should that fail.

Brown Lad {FR}
bay gelding Garde Royal - Rhine Lane {FR}
6
Henrietta C Knight
Ex French-trained horse ran well last term, but was unlucky to come up against Ashley Park at Sandown. Looked after by his trainer last term, and should repay the kindness over fences

Chevalier Errant
brown gelding Strong Gale - Flying Pegus
6
James R Adams
big scopey horse who will improve as the season goes on. Is a chaser in the making but should be up to winning handicap in the second half of the season

Crazy Horse
bay gelding Little Bighorn - Our Dorcet
6
Lenny Lungo
Has always looked decent throughout his career. Looks able to build on his close placing in the Scottish Champion Hurdle. Should jump a fence but why bother when so many of the decent handicappers are novice chasing this season.

Fard du Moulin Mas {FR}
brown gelding Morespeed - Soiree d'Ex {FR}
6
Merrick E D Francis
Winner over hurdles/fences in France, Fard du Moulin Mas may be hard to place this term, but certainly should be seen to good effect, especially when he gains a proper handicap mark

Hayaain
bay horse Shirley Heights -Littlefield
6
Kim C Bailey
Very useful novice two seasons ago when sustaining an injury in the Triumph hurdle. Showed recently that the had retained some of that ability on the flat and can exploit a good mark before going chasing next term

Northday {POL}
brown colt Venecuela {USA} - Northstar {POL}
4
Mark E Sowersby
As yet Northday has not won a race, however he has run a couple of useful traces in defeat and may well be up winning minor races round the smaller tracks

Orsuno {GER}
bay gelding Konigsstuhl {GER} - Orvida {FR}
5
Micky D Hammond
Formally a useful horse in Germany, He was disappointing and like many of Micky Hammond’s stable last term may have suffered from the virus. He starts this season on a very lenient mark despite finding a little race, and may run up a sequence , initially on the Northern circuit

Running Man {FR}
chestnut gelding General Holme {USA} - Rudolfina
5
Paul R Webber
Looked good when winning a Taunton maiden. Did not go on from here, but must be up to winning handicaps at similar tracks
Juvenile Hurdlers

Ecuyer du Roi {FR}
bay gelding Roi de Rome - Mill's Cambric
3
Martin C Pipe
Has already been placed over hurdles in France and would be a similar type to Katarino when he joined our team. Can use his experience to his advantage and who knows how good he might be

Friedhelmo {GER}
chestnut gelding Dashing Blade - Fox For Gold
3
Venetia Williams
One of several flat horses over from Germany with Venetia Williams. Has already shown useful form there and can win over jumps if translating it to hurdles

Genghis Khan
bay colt Sadlers Wells {USA} - Doff the Derby
3
Luke Comer in Ireland
Very useful performer when with Aiden O’Brien, winner of a listed race in Ireland. also ran in the Irish Derby, and the Ebor, is a most interesting recruit if taking to hurdles. Current favourite for the Triumph Hurdle

Golden Goal {GER}
bay gelding Nibos - Goralin
3
Venetia M Williams
Another Ex-German with Venetia Williams. Has decent form here and is thought a better prospect than Friedhelmo. He also can win over jumps if translating his flat form

Iborga {FR}
bay filly Cyborg {FR} - Quintessence III
3
Nicky J Henderson
Half-sister to Cyborgo and Hor da Loi III. No guarantee that she will be as good as those illustrious pair but will be place her owner some useful black type

Ifni du Lac {FR}
bay filly Chamberlin - Acc du Lac {FR}
3
Nicky J Henderson
As yet unraced filly, but is well thought of by her trainer and whilst I don’t expect her to set the world on fire, I think she should be up to winning a small race or two.

L'Epicurien {FR}
chestnut gelding Chet de Clan {FR} - L'Epicurienne {FR}
3
Martin C Pipe
Winner of three races in France, and is a most interesting recruit to these shores

William Shakespeare
bay colt Shirley Heights - Rosova
3
Barry Hills
Useful, if inconsistent type, who on several occasions flattered to deceived, could be useful if he took to the game

ONE TO JUMP - 1999/2000 National Hunt Season

sECTION 1

sECTION 2

Below are a list of horse I suggest are worth following throughout the current season.

Two immediate comments. A lot of these are babies and may not live up to my expectations. However I believe successful punters can make a profit by taking a long term, and this list is really intended to cover the next 18 months, not solely the current season.

Secondly I make no apologies for so many being from overseas. I am simply continuing the trend I’ve follows successfully over the last four seasons, but which now is very trendy to do. There are other advantages. French breds are better schooled generally than our younger horse, it is not unusual for horses to be schooled every day, and it shows. I don’t have as many reservation backing these types over fences as I do some English trained horses first time out over fences

i’m also not surprised at the latest influx of German breds horses. Jump trainers are able to pick up Group horses at half the price the top class French and Irish breds are currently fetching. If they are taught to jump properly they have an obvious advantage and have a good wins to run ratio.

 One of the interesting horses in this list is Invictress, who is a former winner of the Danish oaks. If she succeeds over hurdles she may herald a return to buying horses from Danish waters.... I will be watching her season with interest.
