"ONE TO JUMP!!" 2000

REVIEWS

Over the coming weeks you’ll notice summaries on horses that are potential candidates. I’ve been looking at the Doncaster sales reports. Plenty of candidates there. Mister Banjo is interesting as  We wouldnt be keen to put him in if he stays hurdling, but the opposite would be the case if he goes chasing.  I noticed both Martin and David Pipe bought some nicely bred French horses that could be anything. One ‘cheap purchase that caught my eye were Orsuno going to Venetia Williams.

He really interests me, he’s was in my list last year, and is the sort of horse that she could find several races for around the gaffs, you need horses like that in your list as well. The one thing We can say for certain is that this list will have a larger bumper horse, and point-to-point section this time around. There are several really exciting young prospects bar Union Man lurking around Eventually this list will be whittled down to the format We used last year

KIM BAILEY'S STRING FOR THE 2000/2001 NATIONAL HUNT SEASON

By The 4 Long Pole
Wednesday 27 September 2000

Whenever I compile a list of horses to note, I always insure that I cast my eye over Kim Bailey's string. I do prefer the old fashion approach adopted by the greats... Winter, Walwyn, Forster etc ... That said he has moved with the times and mixes the old fashion chasing types with more precocious hurdling types, as well as continuing to venture overseas for new purchases

Having looked through the information he sent me these are my personal 'favourites'

ALL GUNS BLAZING
Only has one run behind in, in a point to point in Ireland. Not a bad run either as he was certainly making Best on Show (One of the best PTP horses in Ireland last term) work for success when falling two out. He probably would have been held that day, but a good effort nonetheless. Whatever he does this year he must be a future winner over fences
[*NB I'm fairly certain he'll be in FTG's list of Horses to Follow]

B B BOY
As yet unraced four-year-old bought at this May's Doncaster sales. Related to The Proclamation and could be anything.
[*NB I'm fairly certain he'll be in FTG's list of Horses To Follow, I do like having a few unraced ones in there]

BADSWORTH GALE BLAZING HILLS, and SHER ROYAL
All of these are winners of Irish point to points last term. Badsworth Gale none too surprising by name, is distantly relative to Badsworth Boy, whilst Blazing Hills hails from the same family as Tied Cottage. Sher Royal won the second on his two starts after falling when challenging for the lead on his debut. All of these are likely to be campaigned over hurdles this year but like All Guns Blazing are long term chasing prospects
[*NB I'm fairly certain some of these will be in FTG's list of Horses to Follow]

GLORY STORY & DALCASSIAN BUCK
Both were highly rated pointers, as well in Ireland, these two though will be going novice chasing

BLOOMFIELD STORM & CROOKEDSTONE
Two novices who could do well in Handicap Company over fences. Bloomfield Storm did really well initially winning his first two races over fences, before his form tailed off. If he has improved during the summer he has got good chances of further success, however he'll need to, as he isn't well handicapped. Crookedstone on the hand started off from humble beginnings and progressed with each start before running up against the potentially exiting Exit Swinger at Sandown on his last start. He has almost certainly improved during his summer break and may be up to winning races over 3miles

GADZ'ART [FR]
I was slightly surprised to hear that Gadz'art is going to be trained by Kim Bailey, but with hindsight I actually wonder whether that isn't actually a good move on the owners part.

Christopher Iles on our website's "FOCUS ON FRANCE" section wrote of him "Gadz'art - won the Prix Montgomery (a rough equivalent of the Hennessy) last autumn, but hasn't had the pace when running against the best chasers in France. He finished a very distant ninth in the Grand Steeplechase de Paris this May, and may well not have stayed the 3m5f trip.

Its hard to gauge how he'll figure, as Gadz'art in all honesty isn't likely to be well handicapped, but he's interesting and may well appreciate/benefit from a softly softly approach.... Or that's what I'll be hoping anyway
[*NB I'm fairly certain he'll be in FTG's list of Horses to Follow]

ELEGANTISSIME [FR]
He is one of 20 horses I noted that were sold at Goffs France July Sales.... He was formally trained by Criquette Head and is still a maiden after four starts. He has a nice pedigree and whilst I don't expect him to go to the top, there are plenty of opportunities for him over hurdles

FIRST FLIGHT
Studying the results of the Doncaster Sales also paid dividends as I spotted this individual who is a full brother to the highly promising pointer Itsgoneoff who I have no doubt would have made it to the top bar injury.... He's another bumper horse to note this time around

KATIE BUCKERS
As you may suspect this one is a full sister to Annie Buckers who has done well for the stable. She is the winner of her only point to point, and like her sister, she may well go straight over fences

MARCONTESS
In the same vain, Marcontess, a promising third at Towcester on her only start looks another winner over fences for him

LUSSINO [FR]
This horse is a winner of four races in France on the flat. He could well make into a nice hurdler this term

TROUBLE AHEAD
Has summered well and will be aimed at some of the better handicap chases this term

SUPREME CHARM
Also had a good season and this winner of twelve races looks set for another profitable season, however the fact that he ran well in the Marlborough Cup suggest that races like this and the Sporting Index chase figure on his schedule this season

His string appears to be a very young one, especially having removed via sale or retirement 70% of his previous occupants. He does appear though to have together a string that should provide him with some good winners this winter

LORD NOELIE... is he ready to follow in Look Likes Trouble's Footsteps ... by "The 4 Long Pole"

FURLONG TO GO's National Hunt Horses to Follow
Sunday 18th September

I've noticed on several Racing forums there have been plenty of discussion about Lord Noelie, interestingly many views took the stance that that last season's 'Sun Alliance' chase was a poor one... Some even said it was the worst ever!! I dare say many said that the season before when Looks Like Trouble 'benefited' for Nick Dundee's demise .... Steve Mason's assessment in the Racing Post, the day after the race appears to have a strong bearing on this.

Anyway I have had the opportunity to speak to someone close to connections who understandably don't agree, they point out that before the race he had Lady Cricket rated ahead of Nick Dundee in the 1999 R&SA chase and his ratings prior to each of these races would support the view that the 2000 R&SA chase was decent. However, amongst his arguments was that the previously unbeaten over fences, Native Upmanship only won weak races on soft ground. This argument conveniently misses the point that Native Upmanship won 2 grade 1 chases and a Grade 2 chase and only 2 of his wins were on soft; he won over £100,000 of prize money and he beat Commanche Court, giving him 7 lbs, who went onto win the Irish Grand National and the Heineken Gold Cup

Anyway, considering what happened with Looks Like Trouble, I doubt those concerned will be having many sleepless nights!!!

Getting onto the horse himself Lord Noelie is well and will be ready to run in a decent handicap or conditions race around the end of October. Plans are very fluid at the moment because the ground will play an important role in deciding where he goes, as he is best on a sound surface.

"He may the go for the Hennessy after having a prep race but that again would depend on ground and also the weight that he would be set to carry".

Other Horses in the Same Ownership

Whether The Storm
"Whether The Storm will go straight into novice hurdles. He won what now looks a decent bumper last term, and both he and the second that day Alleged Slave look promising individuals worth following this term. He would probably appreciate a bit of cut in the ground and so will probably be out in November".

Lucky Bay
"We bought Lucky Bay after he came 2nd in his only point to point at Liscarroll, The winner, Best On Show was sold for a lot of money and is now in training with Jonjo O' Neil. We bought Lucky Bay from the Keneally family in County Waterford, Ireland.

In the past they have had a lot of good horses through their hands including Berude Not To and Callisoe Bay and they also bred Brief Gale and Marlborough. Lucky Bay has not been over here long and he is still learning to settle. His breeding is unimpressive being by Convinced, who was a decent hurdler for Martin Pipe in the 80s. He hasn't produced anything of note so far. He could start in novice hurdles or a bumper from late October. After that we will know a lot more about him".

Union Man
Those of you who have read me website will be already aware of how highly this individual is rated, it therefore may also interest you to know that he is now in the care of Henrietta Knight.... What his exact plans are at present I'm not sure, no doubt there will be a trainer file on Henrietta Knight very shortly because I believe The Racing Channels cameras are due there

Naturally being an interested party, if I hear anything I will let you know

Union Man, A Future Star is born
30 June 2000

I, like many point-to-point fans have had the pleasure of enjoying a very good season’s sport. It seems as though there are a decent crop of youngsters who should come through the ranks over the coming seasons. Of these the best in terms of proven ability appears to be Union Man, and since he’s just annihilated another field today at Garthorpe, I’d thought I’d take the opportunity to introduce him to a wider audience because he is without doubt, a horse of considerable potential.

We have no hesitation of agreeing with Pat Murphy when he said that at this stage in his career he would be better than Castle Mane. Their backgrounds at this time are similar. Union Man is so far unbeaten, and whilst you could say he hasn’t been really tested, you wouldn’t expect a trainer to go to the well after four runs on the track. He first signaled to me that he had potential when winning a 27-runner affair at Garthorpe. He led most of the way, and impressed with the manner in which he accelerated away from that field. Plenty of winners have come from those who finished behind him. It was a very polished effort.

His greatest assets appear to be both his stamina and his pace. Considering he’s put in another decent time today, it is boosted further by the fact he ran the second circuit quicker than the first, despite being heavily eased down after the last. More evidence that he possesses pace, as well as an abundance of stamina The beauty about him is that time is on his side. They’re no need to rush him.

They could quite easily keep him to point to points next term to educate him further, (I’d think along the lines of something like the John Corbett personally), and still have time to launch a serious assault on the Cheltenham and Aintree. Owner Philip Newton, and Trainer Bill Warner have something to look forward to here. Pen him down for your list of horses to follow next year, so you don’t forget the name in 2001/2002 season!!

Shoemaker

Subsequent to writing this, We remembered that the stable had another horse for whom I hold out great hope in the future, however unlike Union Man, Shoemaker may need more time to come to hand. These two are certain to be in my new list of horses to follow. for this season, so I’ll expand of my opinion of Shoemaker then.

MARTIN PIPE'S RECENT PURCHASES FROM FRANCE...MY ASSESSMENT
by The 4 Long Pole
1 August 2000

Part I ~ Horses That Have Run

HESK (FR) 5-y-o (29May) b g Spoleto - Negrilla (FR)
Has won three on his last seven starts. He is by now means a natural chaser; his recent record at Auteuil testifies to that, but he reminds me of Carlovent a lot and it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't run up a sequence in the early months of the season, or even take an early season prize. He does appear to be well handicap; if the recent mark acquitted to him at Market Rasen is anything to go by.

DEFERLANT (FR) 3-y-o (31Mar) ch c Bering - Sail Storm (USA)
Claimed out of Criquette Head's yard off of the flat, Deferlant romped home in the first juvenile race of the season, and should run up a sequence early on. Time will tell whether he's any better than that

IDEAL JACK (FR) 4-y-o (1Jan) b g Agent Bleu (FR) - Nuit Des Fanges (FR)
Nice chasing prospect who finally got his head in front over here at Worcester last time out. He doesn’t look as though he's a star in the making but will win his share of races, particularly back over the larger obstacles

SUVERTICA (FR) 4-y-o (1Jan) b g Subotica (FR) - Souveraine Bleue
Suvertica probably has disappointed connection so far, however there are plenty of lower grade handicap/claimers that can be won with a horse like this. May be not quite seeing the trip out

Part Ii ~ New Arrivals

JASMIN D'ESTRUVAL (FR)
Cant find out anything about this horse, and I'll be asking Christopher Iles if he's anymore the wiser

BELLE D'ANJOU (FR) 3-y-o (10Mar) b f Saint Cyrien (FR) - Epsibelle (IRE)
Bell D' Anjou is already a winner at Auteuil, and it will be disappointing if she doesn’t at the very lest win a few races over here

DELAWARE (FR) 4-y-o (1Jan) ch g Garde Royale - L'Indienne (FR)
A precocious 5 year old chaser? You never know, very little evidence to go one but he could do no more than win by 15 lengths and he could be anything

CAESAR'S PALACE (GER) 3-y-o (24Apr) ch g Lomitas - Caraveine (FR)
I like this individual and the fact he has already won twice on the flat bodes well for his future over hurdles

CLE DE LUNE (FR) 4-y-o (1Jan) gr f Kadalko (FR) - Chakini (FR)
Cle de Lune appeared to have improved this summer, and the fact she has placed form over fences may make her an interesting proposition with all the allowance she'd be entitled to

HARASARAH (FR) - This horse had pretty decent form in France, winning one of the big handicap hurdles over there. Pipe could have another Or Royal or Champleve on his hands here.

JEAN D'AUTEUIL (FR) 4-y-o (1Jan) b c River Sand (FR) - Santa Marta (FR)
I am under the impression that this horse has winning form in the French provinces, even though I've been trying to track that down. Again I'll have to see what Christopher knows

KAKI CRAZY (FR) 5-y-o (1Jan) b g Passing Sale (FR) - Radiante Rose (FR)
Another winner at Auteuil, with very little mileage on the clock. This looks useful form though so he may be one of the more interesting prospects

ISHANDRAZ (GER) 3-y-o (1Jan) gr c Mondrian (GER) - Isla Limpia (GER)
Don’t know what to make of his flat form, but he is bred for stamina, and hopefully will win a couple of races in juvenile company

MONTREAL (FR) 3-y-o (1Jan) br g Chamberlin (FR) - Massada (FR)
There aren't very many Chamberlin 3year olds racing in the is country but the sire of Challenger du Lac's progeny tend to be real chasing types, so I'll be interested to see what sort of season he has. He looks as though he has a future

HARPPY (FR) 5-y-o (1Jan) b g Kedellic (FR) - Flute De Pan (FR)

Couldn’t find anything about him and I'll be asking Christopher if he's heard of him

GADZ'ART (FR) 6-y-o (1Jan) b g Art Bleu - Naftane (FR)

Gad'zart was bought by Michael Gates at Goffs France - at present he has two trainers - Alan King & Martin Pipe He didn’t know where he will send the horse. Interestingly Christopher wasn't overly keen on this Grade 1 winner winning chaser, as he thinks will be too high in the handicap over here

AFICION (FR) 5-y-o (1Jan) b g Espirit du Nord (FR) - Becerrada (FR)

Was a horse they were interested in at the recent Goffs France Sale, but was not bought as he had a leg problem ~ It'll be interesting if he does remain interested in this useful individual.

CURRENT STARS

Finally I asked Martin about the general well being of some of his stable stars

CYFOR MALTA (FR) looks tremendous and will be aimed at the Gold Cup.

RODOCK (FR) looks really good. I asked him about the Aintree performance. He suggested that it was best ignored, as he didn't like the blinkers. - He may go chasing

SEEBALD (GER) has been gelded - and also may be going chasing.

Hopefully this has pinpointed some of Martin Pipe's future winners sourced from France

ONE TO JUMP - 2000/2001 National Hunt Season

Attached is a list of horses I suggest are worth following throughout the current season.

Like last season, a lot of these are babies and may not live up to my expectations. However I believe successful punters can make a profit by taking a long term, and this list is really intended to cover the next 18 months, not solely the current season.

Again I make no apologies for so many being from overseas. I am simply continuing the trend I've followed successfully over the last four seasons, but which now is very trendy to do, so much so that a significant proportion of these, ( particularly over hurdles) have at some stage been trained overseas.

To demonstrate that I don't have a Gaelic bias, I've got the largest entry of horses I've ever had in from New Zealand, and if the likes of Cardiff Arms, Woodward Street, and Modem do well, it may well re-signal an interest in that market.

I've also avoided as much as possible putting in obvious names, so don't expect Monsignor, Istabraq, and Limestone Lad to be listed!!
