ASCOT'S FESTIVAL OF RACING 2001 -

analysis & Selections by  THE ROOK - Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular  may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race,  we  have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners;  (¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ),   as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds;   (²E/W ALTERNATIVE ) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

I am concentrating on producing our list of horses tomorrow today, so I'll only be providing selections from ascot

ASCOT
Saturday 29th September
2:00 Hackney Empire Royal Lodge Stakes Class A (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) £120000 added, 2yo only colts and geldings, 1m, penalty £72000, 9 runners.
[±±±±±± THE FURLONG POLE ±±±±±±]
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Lahooq, Mutinyonthebounty, Bragadino, Tholjanah, Asheer, and Parasol all have claims in an interesting opener. I expect Bragadino will have his supporters; after all he appears to have the best form, a staying on second to Naheef reads well in this field. Then again Lahooq and Mutinyonthebounty may not have the form in the book, but they clearly possess the potential, if their wins at Kempton, and Gowran Park are anything to go by. Mutinyonthebounty gets the vote in the hope that he has matured enough to task this prize. He was very green when winning at Gowran Park on his last start
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Mutinyonthebounty,
[Positives & Negatives?] -->
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Tholjanah,

2:35 Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile Class A (Group 1) £200000 added, 2yo only fillies, 1m, penalty £116000, 8 runners.
[±±±±±± THE FURLONG POLE ±±±±±±]
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Lets hope Gossamer, and Half Glance run to form, in what could be a fascinating renewal of the Fillies' Mile. Both of these has impressed in both starts thus far, however Gossamer, a full sister to Barathea, really has impressed in winning both starts at Newmarket, and more recently at Goodwood where she quickened impressively to put seven lengths between herself and her toiling rivals... this will be her hardest task, however i hope she passes with flying colours
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Gossamer
[Positives & Negatives?] -->
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Esloob (USA)

3:05 Betdaq Diadem Stakes Class A (Group 2) £100000 added, 3yo plus, 6f, penalty £60000, 21 runners.
[±±±±±± THE FURLONG POLE ±±±±±±]
[Runner(s) mentioned in our "Horses to Follow" Feature] -->Tillerman
[Runner(s) mentioned in our "Future Winners" Feature] -->Mugharreb,
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Invincible Spirit, Pipalong, Vision of Night, Toroca, Nice One Clare, Mugharreb, Orientor, Tillerman, Atavus, and Harmonic Way make most appeal in the Diadem Stakes. Invincible Spirit who has been good form in Europe over this distance will probably go off favourite, however Pipalong, Mugharreb, Orientor, Tillerman, and Harmonic Way , who have disappointed recently, but have the form of the book to take this will surely represent better value. I'd love to see Pipalong win this in the twilight of her career, however Tillerman appears to excel over this track, and as long as [¹] the rain holds off, and more importantly [²] Richard Hughes times his run better than he has of late, then i can see this horse getting into the money ... under the circumstances an eachway option seems safest. The 'alternative' could be Nice One Clare, another course specialist, who could make her presence felt. if handling the step up in grade
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Tillerman, (e/w)
[Positives & Negatives?] -->
[² Alternative ] --> Nice One Clare,

3:40 Tote Trifecta Stakes Showcase Handicap £75000 added, 3yo plus, 7f, penalty £43500, 26 runners.
[±±±±±± THE FURLONG POLE ±±±±±±]
[Runner(s) mentioned in our "Future Winners" Feature] -->Digital
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Mr Mahoose, Continent, Duke Of Modena, A Touch Of Frost, Great News, Capricho, I Cried For You, Ile Michel, Bold King, Golden Dragon, Hand Chime, Millenium Moonbeam, Zibet, and Digital, all have chances in an open showcase handicap. Continent, an easy winner of the Ayr Gold Cup will be popular here after his decent win last week. There will be many punters prepares to take him on though, after all, Continent has found trouble in running in several of the major handicap this term. That could well happen again however that is a risk well taking as Continent is clearly better than a handicapper, and is probably so well in at present that it is a risk worth taking. Of the others Golden Dragon and Zibet are two relatively unexposed runners who may have more to come. Both of them and Digital (on one of this going days) make plenty of appeal as an eachway alternative. I prefer Zibet, who is better than a disappointing effort at Chepstow suggests
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Continent
[Positives & Negatives?] -->
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Zibet,

4:20 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes Class A (Group 1) £325000 added, 3yo plus, 1m, penalty £188500, 11 runners.
[±±±±±± THE FURLONG POLE ±±±±±±]
[Runner(s) mentioned in our "Horses to Follow" Feature] --> No Excuse Needed,
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Noverre, No Excuse Needed, Proudwings, Hawkeye, Vahorimix, Bach, and Olden Times, are the likeliest winners of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes . We are at least guaranteed that this is going to be truely run with Summoner being put in the race to ensure a decent pace. That should suit Noverre, who was given a great ride when coming fast and last to beat No Excuse Needed in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. That wasn't the case at Deauville last time, where a muddling pace ensured the race was more tactical, and as a result, his telling change of gears was nullified, and he was beaten by German-raider Proudwings and Vahorimix. This should be more to his liking, however Proudwings was ultimately a decisive winner that day, and may well be able to confirm form here ... I hope so, the decision of the stewards to take that prize from her was rather harsh, and this Group 1 prize would be ample compensation. Vahorimix has sound eachway claims, and is feared as is Bocelli, a classy challenger from Singapore, who made a pleasing British debut last week when doing much his best work at the finish at Newbury behind Welcome Friend. That was his first run for a couple of months and this stiff track and slightly longer distance will be to his advantage... if would be great if he could nick a place
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Proudwings (GER),
[Positives & Negatives?] -->
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Bocelli (NZ)

4:55 Summit At Lloyd's Rosemary Rated Stakes Class A (Handicap) (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) £32000 added, 3yo plus fillies, 1m, penalty £18560, 17 runners.
[±±±±±± THE FURLONG POLE ±±±±±±]
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] --> Mowaadah, Silky Dawn, Fallen Star, Soft Breeze, Sonatina, Palatial, It's A Secret, Aunty Rose, Sweet Prospect, Kafezah, My Lucy Locket, Den's-Joy, and La Speziana make most appeal in the sixth. Mowaadah, on a hat trick after wins at Kempton and Pontefract; Silky Dawn who could be well handicapped based on her decent two year old form against the likes of Sayedah, and Demophilos, and Fallen Star (an easy winner at Salisbury and Yarmouth), are the likeliest winners. Fallen Star has given the impression that she was at the very least a listed class filly, and with that in mind I will hope she can concede weight to her main rivals here. Palatial, a clever winner at Newmarket last week, and Kafezah, a useful filly on a going day, could be the best eachway options
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Fallen Star
[Positives & Negatives?] -->
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Kafezah

5:30 Caplan Gordon Carter Stakes (Handicap) £20000 added, 3yo plus, 2m 45yds, penalty £14072.50, 18 runners.
[±±±±±± THE FURLONG POLE ±±±±±±]
[Runner(s) mentioned in our "Horses to Follow" Feature] -->Opportune (GER)
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->Flying Lyric, Harlestone Grey, Abyssinian Wolf, Homelife, Lord Joshua, Woodyates, Red Ramona, Seliana, Spunkie, Establishment, and Opportune, all have chances of sorts in a wide open finale. This is a little too competitive a race to place complete faith in your selection, therefore, Seliana who won impressively at newbury in April makes plenty of appeal as an eachway selection, especially with the stable in such good form
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Seliana, (e/w)
[Positives & Negatives?] -->
[Alternative ²] --> Abyssinian Wolf,

ASCOT
Friday 28th September

[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Belle d'Anjou (FR)
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Classic Conkers

2:35 Sodexho Harvest Stakes (Filles & Mares) (Listed Race) £35000 added, 3yo plus fillies, 1m 4f, penalty £22750, 14 runners.
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Isadora,
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Motto (FR)

3:10 Watership Down Stud Sales £259900 added, 2yo only fillies, 6f 110yds, penalty £129950, 29 runners.
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Nobilissime
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Diana Panagaea

3:45 Betdaq Stakes Showcase Handicap £30000 added, 3yo only, 6f, penalty £21320, 17 runners.
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Torosay Spring,
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Polar Kingdom

4:20 European Breeders Fund Classified Stakes £20000 added, 3yo plus, 1m 2f, penalty £13520, 8 runners.
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Covent Garden,
[ ² E/W ALTERNATIVE] --> Vintage Premium

4:55 Esporta Handicap £10000 added, 3yo only, 1m, penalty £7540, 31 runners.
[T.H.E. R.O.O.K.] -->
[ ¹ NØ.1 CHOICE ] --> Oomph, (e/w)
[ ² ALTERNATIVE] --> Irvington

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Gossamer (12/1), Proudwings (10/1), Meshaheer, Smirk, Silent Honor, Dubai Destination, Brave Burt, Cop My Gator, and Yorkshire, were winning selections for The Flatman, and The Rook at the meeting.

THE IRISH DERBY
Galileo won as expected, however Mordshi, and Pugin did us proud !!!

ROYAL ASCOT
Bank Hill (4/1), Medicean at (11/2), plus And Beyond (11/1), Supreme Encounter (7/1),Life is Life (2/1), Royal Rebel (8/1), Beekeeper (14/1), and Johannesburg (11/8) were our winners at the meeting.

THE DERBY
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
