THE AYR GOLD CUP 2002

Analysis & Selections by

  .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

AYR
Saturday 21st September
¦ Iª ¯ AYR ¦:¬>- 1:45 Faucets First For Faucets Firth of Clyde Stakes [Listed Race] (Fillies) £25000 added, 2yo only fillies, 6f, penalty £15602, 10 runners.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>-Ten runners have been declared for the opener at Ayr. Of these, COOL QUESTION, [unbeaten thus far - and a game winner of a listed race at Ripon in August, beating Harb by ½l], GALLIVANT, [who has landed her last two starts, most recently at Chester last month], AIRWAVE, [a good behind Somnus last weekend at Doncaster], GOLDEN NUN, [another winner at Doncaster- she beat beating Summer Lightning by 1 ½l in a valuable nursery], IRRESISTIBLE, [a winner of a York nursery], MEDEENA, [the winner of her last start at Goodwood] and YMLAEN, [ third behind Waldmark at Kempton on her most recent start]. appear to have the strongest claims. Cool Question has done nothing wrong and will be hard to beat, however I'll suggest that Gallivant may prove to be too strong an adversary. .
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>-Gallivant,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>-Cool Question
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>-Irresistible, [e/w]

¦ IIª ¯ AYR ¦:¬>- 2:15 Daily Record Doonside Cup [Listed Race] £27000 added, 3yo plus, 1m 2f 192yds, penalty £16912.80, 8 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªT¯¯|¯¯THE¯¯|¯¯POST¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>-The second race on the card is less competitive. Only VINTAGE PREMIUM, [who wasn't given th best of rides when setting up the race for Beekeeper last weekend at Doncaster], ISLAND HOUSE, [an enigma, who on his day is useful, however is becoming difficult to win with. He didn't run too badly when finishing third Warrsan at Newmarket in July], .JOHANNIAN, [probably need to improve on his fifth behind Leadership at York last time out], and SCHOOL DAYS, [the winner of his last two starts, most recently when beating Ailincala by ¾l, at Carlisle last month]. There seems to be plenty of pace here, which might detract from the chances of Vintage Premium, however he is very gutsy and I'd far rather had my money on a fighter like him, than Island House, who can duck the issue when the going gets too tough.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Vintage Premium,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>-Island House
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>-Johannian

¦ IIIª ¯ AYR ¦:¬>- 2:50 Tote Ayrshire Stakes [H' cap] £30000 added, 3yo plus, 1m, penalty £23400, 20 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªT¯¯|¯¯THE¯¯|¯¯POST¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- True Night, Unshakable, Travelling Band, Captain Venti, Tony Tie, Cat's Whiskers, J R Stevenson, Muchea, Lady Bear, Scotty's Future, Dumaran, Scarletti, Style Dancer and Tedstale, will probably be at the forefront of the market for this competitive handicap, which is the third race on the card. TRUE NIGHT, [the winner of his last four starts, most recently when winning at Chester in August]. and UNSHAKABLE, [unbeaten this season - He stayed on well to beat Judge Davidson at Sandown on his most recent start] are in the form of their lives and will be hard to beat, however CAT'S WHISKERS, [another multi-winner in the line-up. He beat Sociable by 2l, when winning last time out at Thirsk] and J R STEVENSON, [ "useful on his day" handicapper, who tends to attract money when fancied to run well - He didn't run too badly behind Birjand at Doncaster 7f last weekend] make plenty of appeal at eachway odds.... Cats Whiskers gets the vote. .
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Cat's Whiskers, [e/w]
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- True Night,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Unshakable,
¦ 4th place?ª ¦:¬>- J R Stevenson,

¦ IVª ¯ AYR ¦:¬>- 3:25 Carrick Architects European Breeders Fund Novice Stakes £7000 added, 2yo only, 1m, penalty £4901, 4 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªT¯¯|¯¯THE¯¯|¯¯POST¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Only four horses have been declared for the fourth race on the card. WESTERN FLING, [second to Apex Star at Lingfield, last time out], INCH AGAIN, [a winner at Yarmouth over a mile], and KING'S PROTECTOR [who stayed on to beat Sparky's Mate by a nk, at York on his last start] would be the horses I consider .... Western Flings form, looks best and he gets the vote.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Western Fling (USA)
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- King's Protector,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Inch Again,

|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªT¯¯|¯¯THE¯¯|¯¯POST¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>-Injaaz, Attaché, Impressive Flight, Capricho, Croeso Croeso, Halmahera, Pic Up Sticks, Funfair Wane, Royal Millennium, Deceitful, Hurricane Floyd, Bond Boy, Artie, Budelli, Marsad, The Tatling, Tom Tun, Extinguisher and Mine, head the market in an open-looking renewal of the Ayr Gold Cup. Of these I like;

CAPRICHO - who beat Attaché at Goodwood over 7f last time out.
ROYAL MILLENNIUM - who ran well in defeat last weekend behind Smokin Beau at Goodwood
FUNFAIR WANE - formerly a decent two-year-old, he has shown progressive form this term for Dandy Nicholls over longer trips ... this drop back in distance may suit him.
HALMAHERA - Who finally landed the biog race he deserves when pipping Injaaz by a short head in the Portland Handicap last week.
ATTACHÉ - stays further than this trip, and is in good form, won cheekily at Haydock last time out.
TOM TUN - Has been in great form this term, however hasn't been out since finishing midfield in the Steward's Cup
IMPRESSIVE FLIGHT - One of several of these, who have formlines linked with Pic Up Sticks. he beat him at Newmarket last time out.
INJAAZ -headed close home by Halmahera in the Portland Handicap, and is better off here.
BOND BOY - Stewards Cup winner ran creditably behind Cubism at York last time out.
MINE - Bunbury Cup winner has yet to prove his effectiveness over this trip.
EXTINGUISHER - Listed class in france and had some decent two-year-old form ... he is an interesting runners
THE TATLING - Didnt run too badly behind Halmahera in the Portland from a poor draw he has eachway pretensions.
CROESO CROESO - Has been in good form this term and was unlucky in running behind The Tatling at Sandown last time out.
DECEITFUL - Stayed on strongly behind Birjand at Doncaster last time out and is going to be suited by how this race is going to be run.
PIC UP STICKS - Saddle slipped, when beating all bar Toldya at Kempton last time out.

¦ .S.U.M.M.A.R.Y. ¦:>- Capricho is in great form at present and shouldn't be too far away, however Attaché has the right profile for this and if he gets the run of the race he is preferred to Injaaz and Halmahera. Extinguisher, The Tatling and Tom Tun appeal at eachway odds
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Attaché
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Injaaz
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Extinguisher, [e/w]
¦ 4th place?ª ¦:¬>- Tom Tun

¦ VIª ¯ AYR ¦:¬>- 4:35 McEwan's 70/- Ale Stayers Stakes [H' cap] £12500 added, 3yo plus, 1m 5f 13yds, penalty £9353.50, 12 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªT¯¯|¯¯THE¯¯|¯¯POST¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Persian Lightning, Conquestadora, Mumbling, Tees Components, Collier Hill, Perigeo, Dancing Phantom, Tandava, and Trouble Mountain, appeal in the penultimate race on the card. PERSIAN LIGHTNING, who ran on well to beat Duke of Earl at Haydock over 1m 4f last time out is preferred to . Conquestadora, and Tees Components,
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Persian Lightning,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Tees Components,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Conquestadora,

¦ VIIª ¯ AYR ¦:¬>- 5:10 Mac Roberts Stakes [H' cap] (for the Weir Memorial Trophy) £12500 added, 3yo plus, 7f 50yds, penalty £9522.50, 18 runners.
|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯ªT¯¯|¯¯THE¯¯|¯¯POST¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|¯¯¯¯¯¯|
¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Dryden House, Sea Storm, Dayglow Dancer, Cherished Number, Mister Rambo, Waltzing Wizard, Currency, Blythe Spirit, Rudik, Santisima Trinidad, Up Tempo, Arpeggio, and Supreme Salutation, have chances of sorts in the finale. I don't have any strong views on this race, however SANTISIMA TRINIDAD , [who ran creditably at Chester last time out] and CHERISHED NUMBER, [who should appreciate the return to turf after finishing a fair fourth at Dunstall Park last time out] make most appeal .. preferences is for the former.
¦ 1er. _ THE WINNER?¹ ¦:¬>- Santisima Trinidad,
¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Cherished Number,
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>- Currency, [e/w]

THE JULY MEETING
Thursday, July 11th 2002
2:50 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Listed Race) £21750 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £13496.60, 7 runners.
Kawagino, Magistretti, Mubeen, Celtic Sapphire, Our Teddy, and Surbiton, appear to be the horses to consider in race two. Magistretti, [who created a favourable impression when winning at Sandown on his debut] should figure strongly, however I expect (hope) that Celtic Sapphire, and Surbiton, fight this out. Celtic Sapphire, has run well on both start thus far, most recently when staying on really well in the final quarter mile to get within
½Length of Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting. She should go well, however Surbiton, - who met with severe interference in the Coventry Stakes last time out - is taken to atone for that unlucky run.
Surbiton obliged at 16/1.

KAZZIA (GER) - It is easy to understand how it was possible for Kazzia to go into this season's 1000 Guineas unsupported as punters often underestimate the strength of foreign form, particularly that show in Germany or Italy. The warning signs arguably could have gone off in our head at the beginning of the year, as you would have to ask why Godolphin with all their riches would buy a filly who won an ordinary 7f maiden at Hoppegarten before landing a Group 3 at San Siro last October. We now know that to be one of their wisest purchases as this daughter of Zinaad managed to withhold the late thrust of Snowfire to land the 1000 Guineas, despite that race being run at a virtual crawl. She is bred to get further and is proven on the ground...major chance!!!
Kazzia obliges at odds of 100/30

THE DERBY 2001
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
