BEFORE "FURLONG TO GO !!"  [THE WEBSITE] -

I've been writing about racing for several years - Here are some of the articles from my archives

----------------------------------------------------------------------
HENNESSY COGNAC GOLD CUP 1999
Newbury, November 27th
Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup Chase (Showcase Handicap) £85000 added, 5yo plus, 3m 2f 110yds, penalty £48880.00, 17 runners
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1. 2/11fp0- Suny Bay 10-11-10 ;Has definite claims on his early season record, (he has twice thrashed See More Business first time out, giving weight). There is a suggestion, that he is on the decline. More than likely to guarantee the pace in the race, and may be a lively eachway option
2. 14f-113 Djeddah (FR) 8-11-7 ; You wouldn't touch him on last season's form, or on his recent form in England, however has been in excellent form again in France, and would not be without a chance on good/good to firm ground
3. 26441-4 Macgeorge 9-11-8 ; Course and distance winner who probably hasn't been given the credit he deserves for winning the Martell Cup. Another likely to force the pace, and I can see him running a good race, though you wonder whether the handicapper hasn't given him a few pounds too many, even in a weak year. Does however have definite eachway claims
4. 12u111- Young Kenny 8-11-0 ; Progressive chaser who trainer is adamant is getting speedier as he gets older, hence talk of him possibly going for the Gold Cup. Must be considered on last season's form, if he turns out, but only if the ground in genuinely good
5. 1u31/3-1 Hanakham 10-10-11 ; Have never forgotten the image of this horse pulverizing a good field in a Larkhill point to point four seasons ago. Thought he was very good that day and still do. Once possessed the class to win this and must go well, though I think he's a little short in price, on what he's done since winning the Sun Alliance Chase.
6. f/3222f- Fiddling the Facts 8-10-9 ; Very honest consistent mare, who doesn't know how to run a bad race and will almost certainly not in this, however she hasn't won for a long while and is only an eachway bet at best in my view
7. 122p1-f Spendid 7-10-4 ; Very useful novice chaser for last term. Is better judged on his wins at Aintree and defeats behind Unsinkable Boxer at Warwick and Lord of the River at Kempton, than he poor showing in the Sun Alliance Chase. Was still travelling really well when falling first time out, and the likely pace of the race suits,. should go close
8. 1440-11 The Outback Way 9-10-4 ; Admiral horse who surprised me in winning the Murphy's Gold Cup last time out at Cheltenham. However whilst I admire the stable for having a go, and I can see him travelling on the bridle for 3 Miles but I cant entertain him winning at all, I do believe he'll get home at this trip
9. 22/111p- Step on Eyre 9-10-0 ; Not without a chance on some of last season's form, though he did disappoint last time out at Cheltenham. Does go well fresh, but probably has something to find, and is likely to find one or two of these too good.

10. 55-1612- Betty's Boy 10-9-12 ; Cannot be left out of calculations after his battling success at Cheltenham, and subsequent good showing in the Whitbread, however is exposed, and in some ways it would be disappointing if he were good enough to win this. An eachway player at the very least
11. up0-511 Earthmover 8-9-11 ; It was a great pity last term, to see his season capitulate after he had shown so much promise in winning the Cheltenham Foxhunters so impressively. With hindsight I bet Paul Nichols had wished he either put the season on hold or as he has done this term, restore his confidence by going over hurdles. Has looked like his old self again in his last two starts over hurdles, and is potentially thrown in on his old hunter chase form. The handicapper has taken a big chance with him, and must go close with a clear round
12. 1111/34 Doualago (FR) 9-9-11 ; Once useful handicapper, has not shown anything since coming back from injury, and is not good enough
13. 502-112 Tullymorry Toff 8-9-9 ; A lot has been made about the relative jumping ability of some in this field, well arguably the same applies to this horse, though you wouldn't suggest that on this season's form. So far this term, he's looked like the potentially star many thought he would become, and must have claims on his close second to The Last Fling. Sure to go well, and is likely to be particularly suited by the trip/track. One to consider,
14. P/11114/6 Jack Doyle 8-9-8 ; Another joker in the pack. Has the ability to figure in this, if judged on his defeat on Cyfor Malta a few seasons back. Looked in need of his first run, and probably has something to find based on his first run back after injury, but is not without a chance nonetheless
15. ouo4-u1 The Last Fling 9-9-8 ; Another dodgy jumper in the field, who seems to be generating support based on his victory over Tullymorry Toff at Haydock. I can see why he is worth considering despite being out of the handicap, however his jumping record is frankly poor, and whilst he has the ability, I cant entertain a serious bet on such a poor jumper, (I think you would be taking a bigger chance of this one's jumping holding together than you would by backing Earthmover)
16. 2111f-1 Ever Blessed 7-9-4 ; Progressive second season chaser who looked the part first time out at Chepstow, and is closely weighted with Spendid, and Earthmover. Likely to run well if turning out on the day, but is that is becoming rather a big 'if' , and those doubts, plus being a little too far out of the handicap put me off, however progressive he is.
17. 3263/pp- Queen of Spades 9-9-3 ; Very disappointing horse who seems to have completely lost her way and cannot be considered on recent form.

Who'll win the Hennessy ?.... first of all this is not a great renewal, I don't think they're a 'Teeton Mill' lurking in the wings (though Ever Blessed may make me eat those words)......How will the race be run...... The race is likely to be strongly run...... Macgeorge, Queen of Spades, Suny Bay (probably in a visor), and The Last Fling are likely pacesetters. The early stages of the race are important for The Last Fling, he did seem to jump more fluently when given his head. However his suspect jumping is going to be tested by Suny Bay, who at best is spectacular. I suspect that at some stage that will be his undoing, particularly on the second lap, when the 'hold-up horses' play their cards.

Joe Tizzard has a difficult decision to make too,.. Earthmover also looked happiest over hurdles when allowed to force the pace, however he surely would be unwise to get involved in the early shenanigans, with this horse, when his undoubted stamina would come into play on the second circuit.

Of the others I fancy, I'm sure Hanakham, Ever Blessed, Tullymorry Tuff, and Spendid, wont be playing their hands until the second circuit .

It becomes a war of attrition after that, and it the gutsiest horse, or the horse that possesses that little touch of class that will prevail.. in my view

EVER BLESSED
HANAKHAM
EARTHMOVER
SUNY BAY
JACK DOYLE, and
SPENDID

Fit the bill.

My winner this season, ... Well I cant see Spendid not being placed, however I'm prepared to take the chance on Earthmover putting it together, when it matters for two reasons.

Firstly last season went totally wrong, firstly with the injury, and then the jumping going to pot. As a result he is very well handicapped with the likes of Young Kenny, (sure he'll run well, don't think he's well in at the weights] Fiddling the Facts, and several others whom he would have to have given weight to last season.

Secondly, more importantly, on his hunter chase form he is very well in with the second season chasers, whom he effectively either meets on levels , or as with Spendid, he gets 4lbs,...the ability is undoubtedly still there, all that is needed is a clear round, or a round not littered with mistakes, (that's the extent that the handicapper has let him in).

What are the eachway bets, (if you disagree with me about Spendid)............. I would take a chance with the one genuinely proven class act in the race, and take 20/1 with Hills on Suny Bay which is generous for a horse with back-to-back first time out victories over See More Business. There is a possibility that he may be past his best, however until he shows that at this time of the year (when he seems at his best), I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

If you're looking a fun bet at longer odds than him, you could do a lot worse than Jack Doyle. A victory over Cyfor Malta reads well, and will be better for his first run back, after missing last season through injury. Jack Doyle runs that the pace of the race will suit and if getting the trip, would not surprise me in putting in a bold showing. (This once was a good horse and Nigel Twiston-Davies thinks too much of him to not look after him. He is sure to have been well prepared for this.)

MURPHY'S CRAIC MEETING

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Morning, didn't fear too badly yesterday, there were a few more well priced winners to add to the kitty. First day of the Murphy’s Craic Meeting, some small but competitive fields, .. as soon as I know the declarations for the Murphy’s Gold Cup I'll confirm my choice.

MURPHY'S CRAIC MEETING - FRIDAY
1.15 Countryside Raceday Amateur Riders' Handicap Chase (Class E) £10000 added, 5yo plus, 3m 1f, penalty £6905.00, 5 runners.

EARLY MORNING PRICES: 7-4 Star Traveller, 3 Zaitoon, 4 Gigi Beach, 5 Carlingford Gale, 13-2 Doualago.
If you forgive Star Traveller's poor showing last time, he has to be your choice. His form of last season is far superior to these, bar maybe Dualago's from a few season's earlier. He is a confident choice

1.50 Murphy's Irish Stout Novices' Hurdle (Showcase Handicap) (Class D)
£10000 added, 4yo plus, 2m 110yds, penalty £7197.50, 11 runners.

EARLY MORNING PRICES: 7-2 Experimental, 4 Miss Fara, 9-2 Magua, 13-2 Mystery Guest, 7 Afrostar, 8 Cromwell, 10 others.
A very strong Irish challenge in this,... I've seen a few of their entries recent runs, and I was particularly taken by the performances of Experimental, and Magua. Miss Fara has shown far superior form that shown last season, by holding her up instead of trailblazing her. I think she'll really well but fear she will not give weight away to Experimental who is my choice.

2.25 Mitsubishi Shogun Trophy (A Handicap Chase ) (Class B)
£15000 added, 5yo plus, 2m, penalty £10133.25, 5 runners.
1 6/230/4- Arctic Kinsman 11 11 10 J Old T J Murphy 216 D Mrs. R E Hambro

5 0-P4313 Glamanglitz 9 10 0 P Dalton N Williamson 8 D,BF Mrs. Julie Martin

EARLY MORNING PRICES: 9-4 Eskleybrook, 5-2 Dines, 4 Native Charm& Glamanglitz, 7 Arctic Kinsman.
Not a race I like, which may well be determined at the start. Dines will have strong claims if he consents to jump off with his field, his second to Get Real confirms this, however i'm not prepared to take a chance and prefer Eskeybrook who may have run better than it initially appeared when coming third under 12-7 last time out.
3.00 Sporting Index Chase (A Cross Country Chase ) (Class B)
£25000 added, 5yo plus, 3m 7f, penalty £17181.25, 10 runners.

10 322/424- Famfoni (FR) 6 10 7 K Bailey N Williamson 226 The Propelers Partnership

EARLY MORNING PRICES: 3 Linden's Lotto, 7-2 Linton Rocks, 4 McGregor The Third, 13-2 Lucky Town, 7 Famfoni, 10 Emil, 14 others.

Only five interest me hear. The previous winners Linden's Lotto, and MacGregor the Third, who record in this race needs no further comment, Lucky Town and Famfoni who has run well in this type of event before, and Emil, who won a valuable race at the Pardebice Meeting {Czech Grand National}, a few week ago. Linden's Lotto looks a natural at this and has to be the choice. I hope 3/1 is offered. I think Emil is an interesting challenger, and odds above 10/1 are worthy of eachway support.

3.35 Steel Plate And Sections Novices' Chase (Class B)
£14000 added, 5yo plus, 3m 1f, penalty £9530.50, 7 runners.
1 4463-13 Paddy's Return (IRE) 7 11 5 F Murphy A Maguire 13 D Paddy O'Donnell

EARLY MORNING PRICES: 11-8 Paddy's Return, 7-4 Alpine Gale, 4 Stock Option, 14 Mister One, 25 Lester Who& Walter's Destiny, 33 Dunnicks View.

Can you trust Paddy's Return, after such a lack lustre run last time out ?...... no certainly not at short odds. The form of his first win is being knocked, since both the second and third have been beaten since. Alpine Gale has well all season, and she may well be worth chancing to overturn the favourite.
4.05 B E F F Sydney 2000 Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle (Class E)

EARLY MORNING PRICES: 4 Country Kris, 5 Grimshaw, 6 Search For Peace, 7 Never In Debt & Inny Lady, 8 Macy, 10 others.
Another race with a strong Irish presence {Grimshaw, Pearla Dubh, Danaa Mini, Search for Peace, Inny Lady, and Lively Dessert} ,and I fear only Country Kris can prevent it. I'm not convinced he's up to the task and suggest that Grimshaw is a better alternative.

Second and third day of the Murphy’s Craic Meeting, overnight declarations, are shown below.

MURPHY'S CRAIC MEETING - SATURDAY
1.10 Murphy's Three Year Old Novices' Hurdle (Class B)
£10000 added, 3yo only, 2m 110yds, penalty £6710.00, 5 runners.

Early Morning Prices: 7-4 Mixsterthetrixster, 2 Jaguar, 5-2 High Stakes, 8 Calico Lady, 33 Katino.
I think High Stakes can reverse form with Mixsterthetrixster, this track will aid him, and I don’t think he’ll be ridden as confidently as he was last time

1.40 Wadworth 6x Novices' Chase (Class B)
£14000 added, 5yo plus, 2m 4f 110yds, penalty £9439.50, 6 runners.

Early Morning Prices: 11-8 Buck's Palace, 7-2 Life's Work& Prominent Profile, 5 Moondigua, 12 Nasone, 33 World Is Our.

Buck’s Palace was very unlucky last time and I take him to win this at the expense of Life’s Work who won well last time

2.15 MacKeson Novices' Hurdle (Class A) (Grade 2)
£16000 added, 4yo plus, 2m 110yds, penalty £9525.00, 7 runners.

Early Morning Prices: 4-5 Harmony Hall, 7-2 Doctor Goddard, 8 Doon Run, 10 Silence Reigns, 14 Ferny Hill& Light The Fuse, 25 Norman Racquet.

Although I think he is a good horse I wouldn’t take evens Harmony Hall is this field, I actually like the chances of Doctor Goddard who was one of the unluckiest losers of last season {lost at least 30 lengths here at the third last, but flew up this hill to lose out by a length. A reproduction of that effort will be good enough.

2.50 Murphy's Gold Cup Chase (Showcase Handicap) (Class A) (Grade 3)

14 2140-5P Dr Bones (IRE) 6 10 0 P Fahy O McPhail(3) 27 D Mrs. Ann Fortune

Early Morning Prices: 11-4 Majadou, 3 Call Equiname, 7 The Outback Way, 8 Tresor De Mai & Tremallt, 10 Mister Morose, 16 others.
Much discussed race.

Still cant see the appeal of Mister Morose and Tremallt who have themselves in this grade before I would consider backing them. The Outback Way, who despite being better in at the weights is unlikely to have improved as much as Majadou must have done.

I respect Call Equiname, and am certain he will figure prominently in this race, however I think my view on this race became apparent yesterday, I am a Majadou fan, and he may well confirm his class in this, however he is being asked a very big question for a young horse ( Much harder than Cyfor Malta last season). A few months ago he would be meeting the Queen Mother Chase winner on level terms, allowing for weight for age, so I was amazed at the initial plunge on him. Common sense prevailed and I can actually see him going off at a punter’s price, probably second favourite behind Call Equiname.

He is my selection, but I will be backing him at that price. My each way bets are Tresor du Mai, who I suspect will improve significantly at the trip and maybe Addington Boy, who on his Gold Cup fifth is very well handicapped and can operate at this trip

3.30 Hoegaarden Handicap Chase (Class B)

I agree that Hanakhan can win this, but I will not be doing him at the price

Flagship Therese should go well in this and I trust her more than Wisley Wonder who could win but is more likely to down tools if made to fight for this

Despite being badly in at the weights, Majestic has impressed me so far in victory as long as he behaves himself today at the start, {got loose and then did three laps of Uttoxeter}, should have too many guns for Prancing Blade

Very open race. Magic Combination impressed me this season on the flat and would be a sporting eachway bet in this

Fadalko impressed me more than Toto Toscato, in their initial runs and is m choice in this. I suspect Toto Toscato might show significant improvement if and when he’s upped in trip. Fadalko may possess too may guns today

Early Morning Prices: 9-2 She's Our Mare, 7 Sir Talbot, Star of Dungannon & Rodock, 8 Effectual, 10 Star Rage, Danegold, Fatehalkhair& Owen Bart, 12 others.
A very competitive hurdles, and I do respect the claims of Sir Talbot, and She’s Our Mare who have shown a useful form in this company. Fatelhalkhair and Danegold on a going day will be other to consider, however I am have to side with Rodock. Like Majadou I do think he’s being asked a very serious question so early in his career, but there is no secret in hiding the high opinion this is held by the Pipe camp. Make no mistake he is a decent horse, lack of experience may his undoing today. If he is offered at 7/1 then he is worth an eachway bet at least !!!

Gaysun was going very well when falling two out last time, and i’ll take a chance that he atones for that this time around.

Tony McCoy’s booking on Captain Zinzan catches the eye, that wont remain 33/1 for long !!!. I though Pippin’s Ford was slightly unlucky so at present he’d been my choice though with so many so little public form I want to see the newcomers before placing a bet

Success Stories

THE JULY MEETING
Gossamer (12/1), Proudwings (10/1), Meshaheer, Smirk, Silent Honor, Dubai Destination, Brave Burt, Cop My Gator, and Yorkshire, were winning selections for The Flatman, and The Rook at the meeting.

THE IRISH DERBY
Galileo won as expected, however Mordshi, and Pugin did us proud !!!

ROYAL ASCOT
Bank Hill (4/1), Medicean at (11/2), plus And Beyond (11/1), Supreme Encounter (7/1),Life is Life (2/1), Royal Rebel (8/1), Beekeeper (14/1), and Johannesburg (11/8) were our winners at the meeting.

THE DERBY
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
