Champions stakes day at newmarket featuring the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes (gr. 1), the Darley Dewhurst Stakes (gr. 1) and the Tote Cesarewitch H'cap

Analysis & Selections by

  .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k.

Whether it be "the race of the day" or a small prize round the gaffs, we will attempt to use our knowledge of the formbook to highlight the fancied horses participating each day and their characteristics and requirements. Hopefully this 'second opinion' provides you with a winner or two each day, or even reinforces your own view on a particular may even convince you to back some of those horses which we feel are the "ones to fear", or have decent eachway claims. whichever is the case, we hope the information is of use to you.

SELECTIONS - For each race, we have given you who, in our view, are the likeliest winners; (1er _ THE WINNER?), as well as any runners who could run well at eachway odds; (E/W ALTERNATIVE) . Any runner from our features are shown before each race's analysis.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Eight runners have been declared for the opening race on Champion Stakes day. This Group 3 event brings together some of this season's best stayers and should be fiercely contested. The tactics appear to be fairly predictable. Persian Punch (as is his nature) will attempt to make all here, grinding his opponents into submission. He ran a great race last time in the Prix de Cadran (Group 1) at Arc meeting at Longchamp where he set his rivals a severe test only giving best in the final two furlongs. He has an obvious chance here however his Achilles heal is his need to dominate. Whilst he is the heartiest of battlers when he gets his own way, he has spat the dummy out when taken on early in his races. If the connections of Spanish John are brave enough to take him on from the start then Persian Punch's punch (sic) could be nullified. We also now know that whilst he's difficult to beat if eyeballed by a horse immediately next to him, he doesn't show the same resolution if they challenge three or for horses's widths away from him. I have no doubt that Boreas, Cover Up, Foreign Affairs and Pole Star will adopt this tactic if they are in a challenging position in the final quarter of the race. Boreas has already proven the effectiveness of this strategy when sweeping past Persian Punch to land the Doncaster Cup at the St Leger meeting. He has developed into one of the season's best stayers and has conditions to suit him today. He is the selection. Foreign Affairs and Pole Star may have more improvement in them at this extended distance and are worthy of each way consideration.

Nayyir who has run respectably in Group 1 events at Deaville and Haydock must have a good chance with conditions looking likely to suit. However, I have long since believed that demonstrate has been a Group horse lurking in handicap company and I'm not in the least bit surprised he has been given his chance after wins this season at Yarmouth, Ascot and most recently when winning over course and distance at the beginning of this month. He has plenty to find apparently on official ratings, however trainer John Gosden would not be running him here if didn't think he was up to this task. Course and distance winner Millenium Dragon and recent Dusseldorf winner Love Regardless are his main dangers.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Tees Components, Conquestadora, Hugs Dancer, Rapid Deployment, Distant Prospect, Palua, Double Honour, Trained Bythe Best, Direct Bearing, Hawkwind, Callisto, Random Quest, Riyadh, Miss Fara and Establishment are the runners I'd concentrate on from the maximum 36 declarations for this stamina test. I think this race is incredibly hard to call and with so few genuine front-runners in the field, it's difficult to know exactly what sort of early pace there will be in the race. That said, I'd be amazed if 36 horses can't contrive to run a race at a reasonable gallop (the race is usually run at a true gallop), therefore that makes me even more unsure. For what it's worth, Tees Components and Conquestadora should run their races but make little appeal at current odds. I would also be concerned about the state of the ground which by race time may be a little too quick for them. Ebor winner Hugs Dancer is guaranteed to stay the trip and should be there or thereabouts. I don't think this is a race for heavy investment, however Dermot Brown's raider Direct Bearing makes plenty of appeal on the best of his flat/jumps form and off of 8st 5lbs could go close. He is a tentative selection. Those looking for a horse that could run well at a big price could do a lot worse than Callisto (a winner recently at Ayr and Warwick) and Hawkwind (a winner at Carlisle and Goodwood) who should have no trouble with this trip. If they had been in the handicap proper (they're about 8lbs "wrong"), I might have been more confident.

¦ 2nd place?² ¦:¬>- Hawkwind
¦ 3rd place?³ ¦:¬>-Callisto

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- Tomahawk, Trade Fair, Al Jadeed, Desert Star, Rimrod, Saturn, Dublin, Tout Seul and Governor Brown all can be given chances in this Group 1 event. I'm interested that Tomahawk has been priced up as the tissue favourite for this race as he was beaten (apparently fairly and squarely) at Ascot last time out. I appreciate that was his first race since June and I would expect there to be some improvement, however, Al Jadeed is improving with each race and it is by far a forgone conclusion that places will be reversed here. These two won't have matters their own way as Dublin, Desert Star, Governor Brown and Trade Fair have either proven or hinted that they are very near the top of this season's crop. After promising debut outings it was good to watch Desert Star and Trade Fair demolish inferior opposition at Newbury and over course and distance respectively. Trade Fair is a bull of a horse and will probably improve significantly during the winter when he fills into his impressive frame. He learnt a lot from his debut run behind Almushahar and is a banker to make the frame, however I was more impressed with Desert Star who after finishing well behind Governor Brown on his debut at York (where he ran very green) could not have been more impressive when beating 25 rivals at the beginning of the month. I'll take him to give Her Majesty something to look forward to over the winter.

¦ .t.h.e. .r.o.o.k. ¦:¬>- This race is being rubbished in certain quarters as being a poor Group 1, presumably because Nayef, Golan, Islington, Hawkwind and/or Rock of Gibraltar aren't in the lineup. I'm not sure I entirely hold with that view. For what it's worth, Noverre, Moon Ballad, Burning Sun, Storming Home, Rakti, Equerry, Indian Creek and Kaieteur are useful performers in their own rights and I believe a couple of these have the potential to develop into genuine Group 1 performers. Frankie Dettori rides Noverre here, however Moon Ballad who smashed the course record at Goodwood last time out makes far more appeal. Unlike Noverre, who has become temperamental of late, Moon Ballad gives 100% in each effort. He jumps and makes his rivals hurt. I'm sure he will make the early running. He is a genuine Group 2 performer when "on song" and I think you need to be of the highest calibre to get by him. Noverre and Storming Home were definitely good enough at one stage in their careers, however have become too temperamental to be relied on to go through with their challenges here. If Moon Ballad is beaten, I believe the only horse capable of doing so ( if "on song") is Rakti. If you followed our coverage of the major Italian meetings, you'll already be aware of how highly I rate Rakti. I've been fortunate enough to see the majority of his races this season. When he is on song, he has a high cruising speed which he has used to hold his position in his races before showing a good change of pace at the business end of his races. After wide margin successes at Capannelle in March and the beginning of May he was strongly fancied to land the Derby Italiano over a trip which is probably further than ideal. I remember pundits making a lot of the bad run Ballingarry got in the race ( a little overstated in my view), however little was said about the move Rakti made from the back of their field leaving the fast straight which took him from near the back of the field leaving the back straight to lead the field on the bridle entering the home straight. That manoeuvre where he made at least 12 lengths on the outside of the field probably won him the race and it was his class that eventually sore him home. He ran very poorly last at St Ciro, however connections stated that he was suffering from a sore throat. With conditions in his favour, he is at the very least worthy of some each-way interest.

There are some lovely fillies here who probably will be seen to best effect next year (Camlet and L'Ancresse), however it is difficult to get away from Irresistible who beat all bar Airwave who came here and franked the form in the Cheveley Park Stakes next time out. She is a confident selection.

THE JULY MEETING
Thursday, July 11th 2002
2:50 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Listed Race) £21750 added, 2yo only, 7f, penalty £13496.60, 7 runners.
Kawagino, Magistretti, Mubeen, Celtic Sapphire, Our Teddy, and Surbiton, appear to be the horses to consider in race two. Magistretti, [who created a favourable impression when winning at Sandown on his debut] should figure strongly, however I expect (hope) that Celtic Sapphire, and Surbiton, fight this out. Celtic Sapphire, has run well on both start thus far, most recently when staying on really well in the final quarter mile to get within 1/2Length of Helm Bank in the Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting. She should go well, however Surbiton, - who met with severe interference in the Coventry Stakes last time out - is taken to atone for that unlucky run.

KAZZIA (GER) - It is easy to understand how it was possible for Kazzia to go into this season's 1000 Guineas unsupported as punters often underestimate the strength of foreign form, particularly that show in Germany or Italy. The warning signs arguably could have gone off in our head at the beginning of the year, as you would have to ask why Godolphin with all their riches would buy a filly who won an ordinary 7f maiden at Hoppegarten before landing a Group 3 at San Siro last October. We now know that to be one of their wisest purchases as this daughter of Zinaad managed to withhold the late thrust of Snowfire to land the 1000 Guineas, despite that race being run at a virtual crawl. She is bred to get further and is proven on the ground...major chance!!!
Kazzia obliges at odds of 100/30

THE DERBY 2001
"Dilshaan won the Dante in good style and is my preference from this camp purely in that tactics looks to be more straightforward for him and he looks assured to stay based on York. He also has the jockey for the big occasion on board. However, for the selection I will choose Galileo. Unbeaten and untested so far his best performance came last time and the form has already been devalued. Despite this it is the potential this one holds which fires my imagination and there seems an heir of confidence in the Irish camp. Unlike Hills and Stoute he is the sole representative from the 6 entries that O'Brien left in at the recent declaration stage. There are always question marks about Saddlers Well's stock and the 12F trip but Imagine went some way to putting that theory to bed yesterday. It also goes without saying that the stable are in simply super form which is another plus. I take him to beat Dilshaan and Putra Sandhurst. Golan (I think) will come full of running but not get home"
